Hong Kong formally scraps extradition bill that sparked protests

Hong Kong's legislature has formally withdrawn a controversial extradition bill that has sparked months of unrest.

The bill - which would have allowed for criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China - prompted outrage when it was introduced in April.

Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets and the bill was eventually suspended.

But protesters have continued regular demonstrations, which spiralled into a wider pro-democracy movement.

◾HK frees murder suspect who sparked protest crisis

It is the worst crisis for Hong Kong since the former British colony was handed back to China in 1997.

It has also presented a serious challenge to China's leaders in Beijing, who have painted the demonstrators as dangerous separatists and accused foreign powers of backing them.

The proposed bill would have allowed for Hong Kong to extradite criminal suspects to places it does not have an extradition treaty with, including mainland China, Taiwan and Macau.

Critics of the planned law had feared extradition to mainland China could subject people to arbitrary detention and unfair trials.

The bill's formal withdrawal meets only one of five key demands emphasised by some protesters, who have often chanted "five demands, not one less" in Hong Kong's streets.

The others are:
◾For the protests not to be characterised as a "riot"
◾Amnesty for arrested protesters
◾An independent inquiry into alleged police brutality
◾Implementation of complete universal suffrage

Connie, a 27-year-old protester, told Reuters news agency the move was "too little, too late".

"There are still other demands the government needs to meet, especially the problem of police brutality," she said.

Carrie Lam, the embattled Hong Kong leader, has insisted that other demands by protesters are outside her control.

PhatThotty is slower than Apple News. The HK administration announced weeks ago they would formally scrap this bill - the only reason they haven't yet is because opposition lawmakers kept disrupting the legislature.

The announcement failed to please the rioters because obviously if you give in to intimidation once, the intimidater is emboldened to demand even more. Thankfully, since the rioters have escalated to repeated petrol bombings and armed assaults on police officers and police stations, not to mention the vandalism of numerous businesses and public transport stations, most of the world's media have realised the mistake they made in fuelling the fire and have simmered down. This is paving the way for the illegal and violent rioters to be gradually picked off the street and put into the custody of Hong Kong police without too much annoying background noise, and this whole unpleasant situation will be brought to a close.

I believe more than 2,000 arrests were made following the London riots. Come on, China - how about a world record? =D> =D>

Just a reminder, but this is the criminal that the Hong Kong rioters are helping to evade justice by bringing this bill down:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-50148577

A young Hong Kong man took his girlfriend to Taipei on holiday, murdered her and then fled back to Hong Kong. He is trying to voluntarily return to Taiwan to be prosecuted for his crime, but Taiwan has bizarrely refused to let him travel to Taiwan unless they first send police officers to Hong Kong to escort him back - something they cannot do at present because Hong Kong has no extradition treaty with the rest of China.

The Hong Kong administration tried to pass an extradition bill enabling this confessed murdered to be extradited to face justice, but the petrol bomb-throwing rioters have forced the bill to be withdrawn because sadface. So now Chan goes free and is actually physically blocked from facing justice in Taiwan by the Taiwanese authorities - and this is a murderer who is actually trying to get himself arrested! Imagine what happens to the ones keen to evade the law.

So if you're a Hong Konger and you fancy bumping off your partner, then thanks to the rioters you have a consequence-free place just over the sea to do it: Taipei!
