When apostrophe's required.

Postby 2dimes on Sat Jul 20, 2019 9:25 am

I understand that I Like most people, often use an apostrophe when I should not but don't fully understand when that is.

I was reading about how if it is a name you use an apostrophe to make it possessive but for other words you shouldn't but to be honest I don't know what the details are.

The two common uses for an apostrophe I know of and think I understand are as follows. "Bernie's garbage." Could be correct both if it is a contradiction of, "Bernie is" or to indicate possession.

Therefore that sentence needs more context.

Better sentences would contain more information such as, "Everyone thinks Bernie's garbage because he stole the name he uses here and hangs around playgrounds." Or. "That old condom wrapper is probably Bernie's garbage, it's the brand he uses and most people wouldn't have left it in a playground."

Let's see those opinions. Should be a great discussion.

--> this should be " I understand that Like most people, I often use an apostrophe when I should not but don't fully understand when that is.

"That old condom wrapper is probably Bernie's garbage, it's the brand he uses and most people wouldn't have left it in a playground."
--> this should read " "That old condom is Bernie's leftover 'bubble gum', it's the brand he chews and he left it in a playground after watching the young & innocent virgins play."

I would gladly make Nomad a man in a playground. That playground meaning Nomad's pee stained single bed. 8-[

Here we go. Nomad is the contradiction of NomadPatriot, so the apostrophe is needed there for sure. Well done.

I'm not.

That's a contraction of "I am" which on a touch pad keyboard takes just as much effort to type as the long form. You touch four spots for I'm and four spots for I am.

Writing by hand it takes less since an apostrophe is easier to draw than a letter a.

Did your shift lock get set by accident. See how I did not use "you're" there?

Both uses are correct.

Yes, if you saw "Bernie's garbage" without any context, there might be some confusion, but there is almost always context available. Nobody just goes out into the Nevada desert and inscribes "Bernie's garbage" on a rock.

'I'm' takes 3 spots... 'I am' takes 4

and no.. I do not have a 'shift lock' on my keyboard.. it's called Caps Lock..

if you are concerned with your keystrokes.. you seriously have problems...

Fun tread!

What kills me is when people use an apostrophe on a plural noun when it isn't possessive, most frequently seen with acronyms (secondary bitch about when they type out the last word of the acronym like PIN number or ATM machine...aaarrgggggg).

Like "Where are the ATM's?"

Secondarily: What's the VIN number? Gods! (plural of god, not possessive)

THEN, there's the plural possessive in which case the apostrophe is AFTER.

Look at those peoples' garbage!

And Burny's thread title "Trump the RACIST'S President! ". This indicates Trump is ONE racist's president, when I am sure he meant all racists, in which case it should be "Trump the RACISTS' President!".

Or, like, whatever.....

THEN....there's Dimebag's title "When apostrophe's required." I think he did this on purpose, knowing how crafty that bastage is.....

Is it "When an apostrophe's required..."
or "When are apostrophes required?"
or.....?

I feel I have to rise to Bernie's defense on this one, because I did say it was correct in the original thread, and he might have changed it a second time if not for me.

I believe it is correct as written, "Trump the RACIST's President." It's in the same sense as people say "Schwarzenegger is the Man's Man" or "Rossini is the epicure's epicure." It means, from the point of view of the average man, becoming Schwazenegger is the ultimate that one can aspire to. From the point of view of the average epicure, becoming Rossini is the ultimate rung of the ladder to reach. From the point of view of the average racist, Trump is everything one can hope to be.

**Note: I know that the quote one hears most often is "Howard Stern is the Man's Man", but personally I never liked Howard Stern, so I've used Schwarzenegger, who is my personal favourite.

Lol. Meanings aside, my point is grammatically correct.
