mookiemcgee

Your talking about numismatic value, thats dif from silver value.(precious metal value)
Numismatic value can obviously be in the 10s of thousands for coins with zero precious metal content.

Coin collecting is kind of a study of history, which hitred is touching upon, thats one reason some people find it so interesting.

An example. in 1969 the canadian gov didnt think they would be able to produce enough 10 cent pcs, they contracted the philidelphia mint to make some.
They changed their minds real quick but some 1969 10 pcs were minted, those are rare, they have whats knows as a large date, the canadian minted 10 cent pcs have a small date.
Right of the punch those philidelphia minted 10 cent pcs were being sold from anyone that could find one for $25,000.

That was in 1969, my parents home then was a rather large home with lots of land which was later divided into single lots, that house and property was valued at $35,000 at the time.

Just to give you the value of that coin. Thats numismatics baby :D and it was made from zinc if I recall.

Thats why ya wanna know the purity %.

Most Mexican SILVER coins have the silver content on it. The sample 1 Peso above says 14 Gr. (grams) 0.500 means 50% fine. They made it so easy. So take your scale and weight it before you buy. Yep, it's real.

I thought that meant 14 grams of .500 or 50% silver.

Ive heard "grains" before, wasnt sure about it so I googled.

The Coinage Act of 1792 defined a dollar in terms of silver. Specifically, a dollar was to be 371.25 grains (equivalent to about three-fourths of an ounce) of silver, in harmony with the Spanish milled dollar. Thus, the true foundation for U.S. circulating currency was not gold but silver.

1953 they just put the 27 7/9 "G" then 0.720 fine
So almost an ounce then 72% of that is silver.

I guess I was speaking in those generalities. lol
Canadian coins and I dont think american coins have their weight or content of silver on them.

Neat Mexican coins did.

Studying coins has a longer, better history than the collecting of modern day coins to be fair. Ancient coins hold depictions of classical rulers and emperors and depict them in certain ways that indicate their likeness, but also their backgrounds and authority. I've got nothing against modern coin collectors, but they're not always the historians they claim to be. They're more collectors.

The concept of LIBERTY is a repeating theme.

True, but that's not much of a stretch given that the histories of those countries are well established by better sources. Indeed. as you point out, the iconography is almost standardised, and an imitation of an older idea.

Still, a good point especially given the thread.
