I still have NO IDEA what this day means.

On the other hand, the incredibly not British Good King Wenceslas did according to legend transcribed in song, trudge through the snow to give a present to a peasant.

And a Happy Feast of St Stephen to EVERYONE!

It's funny. When I first came to Canada, I was told that "Boxing Day" was called that because people needed a day off to break down all the useless packaging from all their Christmas gifts.

It's only later that I learned the true origins. Apparently Boxing Day originates as a day when employers would give gift boxes to their employees. Christmas Eve was when people would exchange gifts with family only. Christmas Day was a Holy Day, so the next workday, the 26th, was the day for gifts to employees and other non-family relationships.

------I seen on M.A.S.H...once British soldiers visited the 4077th...I think it was the day after X-MAS....In the British army the Officers and Enlisted men would switch places...Generals would become privates etc....I think that is what happens on Boxing Day in the British armed forces... Of course, he is a funny person and was a pretty impressive athlete, especially considering his body mass index. I like people of all colours, everyone sweats sometime.

I'm not special though. Lots of people are not racist.

Boxing Day rhymes with Timothy McVeigh. Therefore the day is about him.

Heh, I thought it was a day to give old presents to the poor and needy, but really just a day to get over the hangover like New Years +1.

I heard elsewhere it was because it was the day that the churches opened and distributed the Poor Box. And elsewhere that it was the day on which gifts were traditionally opened. And also that it was the day on which you would tip people like the dustman, postman, etc.(I've certainly heard an Xmas tip referred to as "a Christmas Box"). I don't think anyone actually knows for certain where the name came from.
