I think it was Carbondale Ill, where the longest time of Totality occurred: temp dropped from 104 to 94 F. That is a BIG drop, 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

I was in the 86% max of sun block, not SPF 15, LoL

The event lasted nearly 3 hours for us in South-Central VA. It was really COOL for so many. I could have stayed home to watch it, but I was glad to share it with some 200 others at this little Library in the middle of rural VA.

It was awesome. Original plan was to stop in Dahlonega but traffic had been surprisingly light on 400 and pretty much non-existent once I hit back roads so I found myself all the way into the totality range and only missed the first 10 minutes of it starting it's journey across the sun. The creeping itself was pretty cool even though through those glasses I could barely see through but the totality event itself was amazing. A deep twilight with animals going crazy all around me, the suns corona and the brightest stars and a planet (I'm pretty sure it was Venus but didn't confirm) visible. It's impossible to explain if you've never seen one in person, even replications fall well short. Only 3 minutes or so long but I think that might have been the coolest thing I've ever seen.

The rest of the day was pretty exciting as well. I stayed up there at the border of Georgia and North Carolina (crossing over back and forth a couple times, I think I even crossed over into Tennessee at one point), enjoying the scenery and got a late lunch/early dinner at a local place in Blairsville on my way back. I did end up sitting in traffic most of the rest of the day but well worth the trip and would have gladly sat in traffic even longer if it meant seeing another one.

Also, I've noticed no damage to my vision, so that's pretty cool.

Very COOL, wolf. Thanks for sharing your story.

The best part is to be in the 100% (aka Totality); that would be cool to experience. As stated above, I was only 86% max in Richmond, VA area. I make the pinhole "Camera" for my wife and her co-workers. They appreciated it and they said it worked well, IF there is ONLY the pinhole and that the one with larger hole did not work well. I made 4 in all and tried one with larger hole and that hole was MUCH bigger than I planned. LoL

Anyway, to see the 2-3 minutes of darkness and see animals go "Crazy" not knowing what to do would be SOOOO cool. I am glad you enjoyed the day, getting a good meal and being able to share the experience with others. I learned that my brother-in-law now lives near where the next one will be, so I told him to buy an RV and steaks to grill for us to camp out for the next eclipse......LoL.

I am NOT Sure, but the "ocean waves" you noticed may be due to

1) rising heat waves (or infrared radiation) rising off the hot pavement (THINK of a mriage of a water puddle on the highway and

2) you were more observant of such things because you were looking for things that were out of the ordinary.

That is my theory, and I am sticking to that, and as a good scientist, will hold that view until presented with a better theory back by evidence.

and note the difference between 99 and 100%...see what strike wolf wrote. This is all very interesting, so thanks for sharing.

Yeah, wasn't like heat waves rising.....you made me go look it up dammit...lol. Apparently, they are called Shadow Bands....from this page

http://americaneclipseusa.com/about-ecl ... phenomena/

Shadow bands are sometimes visible along light-colored surfaces just before and after totality. At this point, all that remains of the Sun is a tiny sliver of brilliant light that actually ā€œtwinklesā€ like a star through the windy layers of the Earth’s atmosphere. Sunlight passes through these rolling and boiling layers of turbulent air, producing these alternating dark and light bands on the ground, similar to the effect of undulating waves of sunlight dancing along on the bottom of a swimming pool. A large piece of white poster board can provide enough contrast for viewing shadow bands.

A buddy tried to get a video of it....be interested to see if it came out.

Cool story Wolfie. Not sure if I mentioned my son was up camping in a 100% spot. Said the forest got eerily quiet during the total dark, then birds etc freaked out when it got light quickly again....lol. Glad no black bear were near....

This has a guy that explains things very well including the shadow waves. He said there had not been any good video of it captured yet. I don't know if anyone has got it from 2017, I have not found any so far on YouTube.

We enjoyed the event in big St Paul, Oregon. Population tripled for the event - really could have used an espresso cart!

A Dazzling couple of minutes. Perfect weather, worked on the wife's classroom while we waited.

Hope to see another someday..

Yes, I hope to see the next one and be in the area of Totality. That would be COOL...! Literally and figuratively.

I have now seen 2 partials and so I will put Totality on my Bucket List.

What does your wife teach, Frito?

K-12, and bands too, is a HUGE commitment of time and effort.

I assume that the school district is rather small.
