Admiral Thomas Moorer

Moorer believed that the attack on the USS Liberty in 1967 was a deliberate act on the part of the Israelis and that President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered the cover-up to maintain ties with Israel.

The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War.[3] The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two marines, and one civilian), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship.[4] At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish.[1][5]

Israel apologized for the attack, saying that the USS Liberty had been attacked in error after being mistaken for an Egyptian ship.[6] Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the ship's identity,[2] though others, including survivors of the attack, have rejected these conclusions and maintain that the attack was deliberate.[7]

In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3.32 million (equivalent to US$22.9 million in 2016) to the U.S. government in compensation to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3.57 million ($23.3 million in 2016) to the men who had been wounded. In December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million ($17.4 million in 2016) as the final settlement for material damage to Liberty itself plus 13 years of interest.[8]

Being now dead, I'm sure he's gotten over it.

Well, there's a lot in that section right there, so let's break it down.

In the first place we are talking about "Trump supporters who had been apolitical previously" ... where the topic title is about "Republicans" which I have to assume is in general, conservative ones, neoconsercative ones, establishment ones, log cabin ones, and so forth. Not about people who voted once for a guy who ran on the Republican ticket. Whether they have actually become "Republicans" remains to be seen.

The other sort of Republican was covered in the second half of my statement, which you cut out.
Dukasaur wrote:With the more mainstream Republicans, I don't think that's the case. I know quite a few of those also, and none are particularly hateful. What they are is simply greedy, and the mainstream pre-Trump Republican agenda reflects that. Tax cuts for the rich, wage cuts for the poor.

I think I was pretty clear about the fact that this phenomenon of hatefulness is a new thing. I met lots of Republicans when I travelled a lot in the U.S. in the early 80s, and none of them were particularly racist or hateful. In the 1980s and 1990s, I think most people felt that America had pretty much escaped its history of racial tensions and was moving towards a colour-blind future, and that includes the Republican party of the time.

tzor wrote:In the second place, you went from "towelhead" to racist in basically a leap void of logic. Now it is important to understand that I despise the term immensely as a horrible insult and slander (but to whom, because that is the question that cuts to the problem). Having spent a lot of time in New York City, if you were to ask me who wore turbans, I would quickly state "Sikhs" who come from India and are definitely not Islamic. But even if we consider the insult to people of the religion of Islam, that is not in and of itself a race. That would be the same as calling the hatred of all Christians "racist." There are those from Asia, from Africa, and from the Middle East, a vast number of different races and ethnic backgrounds.

The "leap void of logic" is not mine. It's entirely on the part of the yahoos we're talking about. You certainly don't need to lecture me on the fact that there's differences between Sikhs and Hindus and Muslims. I know geography and history. It's the yahoos that don't know there's a difference.
wikipedia wrote:Non-Arab and non-Muslim Middle Eastern people, as well as South Asians of different ethnic/religious backgrounds (Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs) have been stereotyped as "Arabs". The case of Balbir Singh Sodhi, a Sikh who was murdered at a Phoenix gas station by a white supremacist for "looking like an Arab terrorist" (because of the turban that is a requirement of Sikhism), as well as that of Hindus being attacked for "being Muslims" have achieved prominence and criticism following the September 11 attacks

I defined my terms very clearly. I wasn't talking about the older, more mainstream Republican, who is probably a member of the Rotary Club and probably knows an awful lot about world affairs. I'm talking about the new yahoo brand of Republican that didn't come down from the hills until the Trump campaign began, as epitomized by our own karel, for instance. These people would probably be hard-pressed to point to India on a globe. They certainly wouldn't recognize the Golden Temple of Amritsar if it fell on their foot.

And yes, I am correct to characterize their hate as racist hate, under the simplest, most functional definition of racism: hating those who look different from oneself. The fact that they hate people who may not be genetically much different is irrelevant. They hate "otherness". Anything that looks different is suspect. The black, of course, and the swarthy Mexican, but it doesn't stop there. The Sikh with his turban. The Arab with his keffiyeh. The Jew with his peyois. The Plains Indian with his pompadour. All these people look different, all of them are targets for hate. Whether their "otherness" is due to race (as with the blacks) or to religion (as with the Sikhs and Jews) or just to regional culture (as with Gypsies) or some combination thereof (as with North American natives) is completely irrelevant. The yahoo doesn't look for nuances, doesn't study history or geography, and in plain English, just doesn't give a shit. He hates people who look different than himself, and he doesn't ask complicated questions about why they look different.

I am just here to agree with this and add it breaks my heart.

It was all of North America and included all political parties. Things looked on course for racism becoming a ridiculous idea from the past. Now we have went back by decades.

I know there were still pockets of racists but they were in much smaller groups.
