IMPORTANT

Humans have only slept in a single block for about the last 200 years. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, humans in the west typically had two sleeping periods each day. First Sleep would go until midnight. Then they would wake-up and spend two hours visiting neighbors, writing, and doing household chores. Then they would return to bed for Second Sleep until the morning. Now we just have Sleep.

Yes, biphasic sleep. It became obsolete with the spread of electrical lighting.
