When it comes to tile ask jl anything...jltile that is!

Postby demonfork on Tue Dec 27, 2011 1:03 am

Good news to all us CC goers!! We have an expert in the field of tile, grout, kitchen ceramic, granite, concrete staining and the like right here amongst us all!

jltile is your man.

If you have a question, this is the place to ask it... jltile has graciously agreed to answer all of our tile questions on a first come first serve basis.

As part of this service he has also agreed to check in every 2nd Tuesday (except in the event that a Tuesday happens to occur on the Vernal or Autumnal Equinoxes) and spend an hour or two for a "real time" Q&A.

Ill kick this off with the first question....

J...I have a 3/4 inch tongue & groove plywood floor decking in my home. Can I put ceramic tile directly over this in my upstairs bathroom, with mastic? Or should I put down a concrete backer board or more plywood first?

P.S.

It took a lot of courage on jl's behalf to agree to this...I want to be the first to say how proud I am of him for taking this on! We all know how frustrating tile installation can be from time to time.

Thank you jl.....from the bottom of my heart I thank you!

My front door threshold (bottom of door) is only 1/2" above the floor. I understand that to lay ceramic tile properly I need to put down durarock, or hardibacker board prior to the tile, but then I won't be able to open the door! FML

I need to remove 1 ceramic floor tile and replace it. What is the best way to remove without damaging surrounding tiles. Also I have plenty of left over grout but no mortar.

Thanks JD, that was helpful but I think I'm going to hold out to see what jltile has to say. That's great that you were one of the first to use tile, how long has it been around then? It's fascinating stuff really and I can't wait for Tuesday!

jl- We have a vinyl tensonflex floor and are thinking about changing to ceramic tile. My question is have you ever done this? Do you like or dislike, and gone back to what you had previously?

Look guys, this isn't going to work if there are no questions being asked. jt has gone to a lot of trouble to take the time from his busy schedule to answer our tile questions.

That's easy! Pray to your mormon god, and will be good! Praise the lord!

But wait! 21. Mormon spells prayers don't work in the presence of menstrating individuals.

You might need to have pimpdave or your dear friend king herp to conduct the prayer!

I have answered these questions already herp remember I told you to use a box cutter and cut the door a lil higher. And Demon to take your finger nails and take the tile up remember I told you to lay it over the carpet for easy removal. Duh =D>

I'm thinking about using tile as a media for a "feature wall".

Do I need to use a hardback to place over the drywall or can I apply the tile directly to the textured/painted drywall?

jl- 15 years ago, we chose polished porcelain tile for our kitchen floors. The fam and I were extremely happy with our decision and to this day we haven't had any problems with it's integrity. However times are a changing and the color no longer suits today's tastes. If you would suggest something newly charming and decadent that could maintain it's same luster it would be very much appreciated, thanks.

I recently picked up a used 80s-style space shuttle at public auction. it's in fairly good shape but is missing a few tiles. Is that anything to worry about?
