World under threat from prying and subversion of America

Greater global cooperation required to fight cyber crime

The ransomware virus, dubbed WannaCry, can encrypt all the files on a Windows PC and demands $300 worth of bitcoin, an untraceable digital currency widely used online, to unlock a user's data.

The unprecedented global cyberattack that began on Friday has reportedly infected hundreds of thousands of computers in more than 150 countries and regions, including China, where around 30,000 institutions such as universities and gas stations have fallen victim to the WannaCry ransomware, according to Qihoo 360, a leading Chinese internet security company.

The scale of the attack shows that in an increasingly interconnected world, no country should consider itself safe from cyber threats.

So far no clues have been uncovered as to who was behind the malicious software, which locks users' computer files and demands a ransom payment of $300 to $600 to unlock them. However, the US National Security Agency must shoulder some of the blame, because the computer virus is based on one of the hacking tools that the agency created for its own use, which ended up in the hands of cyber criminals.

That an agency tasked with protecting citizens from cyberattacks was itself so vulnerable to hackers shows how serious the problem is.

However, concerted efforts to tackle cyber crimes have been hindered by the actions of the United States.

For many years cyber security has been one of the major frictions in bilateral relations between China and the US, with Washington often pointing an accusing finger at Beijing, claiming it is engaged in state-sponsored cyber espionage, although it has offered no credible evidence to support its accusation. As a result, Chinese companies such as Huawei Technologies have been effectively barred from the US market.

This is hypocritical of the US, to say the least, because no other country has mounted such wide-ranging, costly and long-term surveillance operations in the history of the internet as the NSA's PRISM and other spy programs. Among other things, the latest cyberattack should instill greater urgency in China's efforts to produce its own core technologies, as President Xi Jinping has urged.

The time has come for countries to wake up and take robust measures against the Warlord of the West:
- Bar American tech companies from their economies
- Embargo the America security agencies that undermine even America's so-called friends
- Nationalize web security
- Prevent national data being held on American servers
- Declare America a cyber manipulator

f*ck you!!!

I am so sick of people, politicians, who the f*ck ever, whenever some troll does something stupid, some moron gets butt hurt, and calls go out "The government's gotta take over this interwebz stuff!" nonsense. Hell, the interwebz were completely unregulated for a long time and it was great. Sure, there are some shady mother fuckers on the interwebz, but there are shady mother fuckers everywhere, you learn to deal with them. The interwebz were once pure, unadulterated freedom. Let the information flow, Some ignorant moron in the middle of the US could talk to some ignorant moron is some other pissant country half a world away and each could learn something from the other and they both come out slightly less of morons. That's awesome! That's great! It's not great if the leaders of one country start having to deal with their people getting information from something other than the official government sanctioned "news". But f*ck them, the interwebz bring people closer from all over the world.

And now, morons are calling for governments to cut up the interwebz and turn it into virtual "countries" with virtual borders. Talk about walls!
Let the porn flow, let the fake news fly high, let the trolls troll, let the pranks prank, let the hackers and the computer security industries battle, let the spies spy, just keep the regulating government out of it so the rest of us can enjoy the web with pure freedom. Bad things can and will happen, but also great things will happen as we explore this vast virtual universe without limits. We don't need no stinkin' government politicians taking control of the internet. The cops can be free to cruise the web searching for criminals, like the filthy kiddie porn assholes instance.

Just don't make it harder, more expensive and more hassle for regular people to go out into this great place that is the interwebz. Besides, everyone knows the really crazy shit is in the dark web where most people don't know how to get to and don't ever want to go to that dark universe. Anyone who willingly chooses to go into that cesspool deserves whatever befalls them and no amount of regulation is going to eliminate that blackness. Best to let it be, separate and where most normal people won't ever see it or experience it. Some of the people things that populate that place are not only crazy but also brilliant in their warped ways.

I'm so confused. :?

I can' reconcile this thread (Subject: World under threat from prying and subversion of America) with this other thread: (Subject: China outsmarts Americans once again)

So which is it?

Are the Chinese spy agencies brilliant super-geniuses who run circles around the dumb American spy agencies? Or are the American spy agencies the brain trusts from which the poor Chinese nincompoop spy agencies need protection?

I'm parsing it as many ways as I can, but I just can't see a way it's both.

Oh, and while I'm here, I agree with what patches posted.

I love the line from Charles on the show Brockmire when Charles said-

"Sometimes I like to type a random body part to see if someone has stuck a dick in it. Someone always has."

Har! That's what's great about the interwebz. Leave it to the politicians who wanna tell us what we should/could/are allowed to watch and the interwebz will become a boring, pathetic place full of misery and mediocrity. JUST LEAVE THE INTERNET ALONE. People gotta stop sweating the petty stuff and start petting the sweaty stuff. IMO.

1 - America completely fails at using agents to conduct physical reconnaissance within Chinese borders
2 - America's hacking and digital sabotage is off the charts

I don't see any contradiction there.

You guys really have your hands a long way up America's ass if you think legitimate concerns about America's control and infiltration of international cyberspace are so laughable that people expressing them can only be trolling.

I have legitimate concerns about America's intelligence community manipulating cyberspace. I have equally legitimate concerns about Russia's intelligence community manipulating cyberspace. I have equally legitimate concerns about China's intelligence community manipulating cyberspace.

The "trolling" part, I suppose is where you pretend that one of those is a problem and the other two are not.

... and the other thread, where you try to pretend that the failure of the West to spy effectively in China is a function of "outsmart"ing, rather than just a natural consequence of the advantage that dictatorships have over democracies when it comes to this kind of thing.

America is the most pervasive when it comes to this sort of activity. How many WannaCries, hackings of Merkel's phone or targeted attacks on foreign government infrastructure (e.g. the malware attack on Iran's nuclear sites) are China responsible for?
