SPOILER - REAL STAR WARS THREAD - SPOILER

Postby jimboston on Sun Dec 20, 2015 9:27 pm

So I liked it, but I didn't LOVE it... at least not on this first viewing.

I may have had my own expectations too high.
This may have been my downfall.

Thoughts?

Sucked BIG TIME.

#1 - waaaaay too long - if there was an actual plot a long movie is fine, but ...

#2 - no plot - it was a shot by shot remake of Episode IV - planet sized cannon, gotta fly down a trench to blow it up, orphan from a desert planet helps out, test firing blows up a politically important planet, cute robot races around with secret info loaded on it, etc.

#3 - there was absolutely no build-up ... in the original series they only hinted at the Emperor's name for the first two movies and you didn't see him until the final installment, nor did you see Vader unmask himself until the final installment - within 30 minutes the bad guy unmasks himself and you see the Supreme Leader

#4 - bad guy was basically a moody Emo, not intimidating like Vader at all - a Storm Trooper who had never handled a light saber in his life almost defeated him! (and why is what's his name wearing a mask at all? because it makes his voice sound scary?)

#5 - the Storm Trooper who is a sanitation worker who knows all of the engineering specs?

#6 - acting by several characters was total shit (see: Carrie Fisher) - for those who could act they were delivering cartoon lines, everything seemed cartoonish, like a Saturday Morning Justice League episode - in the original trilogy people spoke in a way you could suspend your disbelief and imagine adults speaking ... not in this one, it was like Aladdin, and Ren was basically as scary as Jafar

#7 - parts that were supposed to be serious were just slapstick, like when the New-New-Death Star fires at the Republic's capital or whatever, everyone races out on the balcony and grimmaces in horror while looking at a skyline that looked like it was a rehashed generic alien capital mural from a late '90s episode of Star Trek TNG

#8 - no sense of scale - everything just seemed to be happening small-time ... in ROTJ there was this huge battle fleet that assembled to take-out the Death Star, now you have a Death Star that's 30X as big and they send 20 banged-up X-Wings that manage to do the job without breaking too serious of a sweat

My first two complaints...

1) A Death Star by any other name is still a Death Star. As a kid, a new Death Star was cool in ROTJ. As an adult, a 3rd Death Star is just bogus. Oh but wait... it's made from a planet, so that's different! Not.

2) Kylo Ren in a fucking pussy. I'm sorry... he cannot be Han Solo's son. No son of Han could be such a pussy... there must be some mistake.... amiright?

No.

Moody Emo's I can deal with... if they are in the appropriate role.
Dr. McCoy is kinda a moody emo.

I think Ren is really more of a pussy than an Emo.
I just don't buy him being tough at all.

I haven't seen the movie yet, although I am looking forward to it. I'm unconcerned about spoilers, but my biggest concern before the film was released (and was confirmed through watching the trailers) was that this would be A New Hope redux. I mean the number of analogs in the trailers alone are concerning:

- First Order = Empire
- Kylo Ren = Darth Vader
- Resistance = Rebels

It's almost as if Return of the Jedi didn't happen. I mean, at least pretend things are different than the original trilogy.

The first order is supposed to equal the Empire who equal nazis who equal isis, etc. They even flat out say, there was allways an evil that was the same. I loved when they showed the stormtroopers at their "Nuremberg" style rally in this one.

Yes, he is just copying his hero.

Now go watch Sisters so you can make a thread complaining it's too much like some movie before it.

You can't really blame Carrie Fisher for her bad acting. She had so much Botox in her face that it was essentially plastic.

Ok, back to Ren Kylo.

He was a pussy and emo, most importantly, someone no body liked for a long time. He keeps having temper tantrums and wrecking things with his light Sabre. It's nearly comedy when he talks to Vader's crispy helmet and there's nothing there.

I think he is the typical product of being mommies little prince who ends up unable to grow up and face everyone else refusing to cater to him.

The poll is very close by the way.

So you are saying he is science fiction's depiction of today's American Millenials / Millenial Generation?

The dudes a good actor I suppose, but I've only seen him in this movie and in the HBO show "Girls". I didn't like that character either!

I found it fairly entertaining and definitely way better than episodes 1 and 2 (I didn't even watch 3). That said, I agree with saxi's points that they spunked all the mystery way too quickly, the x wings' victory was stupid, and the new death star aka death planet was an incredibly lazy inclusion. Maybe in episode 8 Carrie Fisher will shout 'I am your mother' at Kylo just to really round things off.

I decided not to watch 3 because 2 was so bad. Finally watched it and it was actually good.

Yes. I think he probably is excluded from being royalty because his dad is a commoner and his mom prefers being "General Liea."

I found it quite enjoyable actually. The similarities between IV and VII are actually quite endearing if you take them as intentional nods to the audience. You can't blame him for struggling with Fin in the lightsaber duel. I think there are hints there that while not as strong as Rey (Sp?) he has some jedi potential. Plus it was shown that he was severely injured and kind of toying around a bit too much in that duel. I actually found the lightsaber duel scene at the end between him and Fin and then him and Rey quite cool from a you can kind of tell they're all amateurs angle. I mean Ren showed some degree of skill over the other two but he also had a tendency to default into a hack away mentality with large unbalanced swings.

Really I didn't need the build up to the big reveal of the big bad like the original trilogy. Been there done that.

Also criticizing the acting in Star Wars? That's like making fun of a dog because it's tail wags. Star Wars is almost synonymous with bad acting. If anything the overall acting in this movie was slightly better than most of the others.

Most dramatic Star Wars death since Darth Vader in Episode VI...

I think what I liked most about this movie was that i am seeing a new angle and this is just the introduction to it. This isn't the original trilogy where you had a big bad trained Sith acting as enforcer to a great manipulator behind the scenes while the good guy trained to become powerful enough to defeat them. Or the prequel trilogy where you saw said big bad sith growing up and turning to the dark side while the then in power light gets set up to fall. This is a new story where the heroes and villains are still learning. Sure Kylo Ren has a head start but we are going to see them all grow in power and skill as the trilogy comes to its eventual close.

I think I enjoyed the scenes with the Millenium Falcon the best. There was a lot more to the original trilogy than the Falcon but to me it's my favorite part (except maybe original trilogy Darth Vader). The flying scenes are both tense and fun.

Overall I wouldn't say the movie exceeded my expectations but I did thoroughly enjoy it.
