QFT, there are many good songs, how can you classifiy one of them as the greatest?

stinkycheese wrote:Haha, it is obvious that you have a bias because Stairway is your favorite Zeppelin song, the Lemon Song is my favorite Zeppelin song but I'm not going to pretend it is the best. I would put my money with Dazed and Confused, Whole Lotta Love, Bring it on Home, etc...because those are the songs that Zeppelin jams on during their live sets. The ones that have the same length live as they do on the album are only there to please the crowd and to showcase whatever their newest release was.

The bit about the bias is true, but that doesn't mean that I don't think it's not also the best rock song ever written.

As far as the songs that Zeppelin jams too; sadly, I'm am just slightly too young to have ever been to one of their concerts in person, and, barring actually being at the concert, I generally dislike the live versions of songs. So, yes, my tastes do tend to run towards the songs written to be played from an album as opposed to those written to be played live.

This is the same reason I have never been a Kiss fan - while their concerts rock, their songs, barring the concert environment, are pretty monotonous.

stinkycheese wrote:DSOTM has been put way too high on a pedestal...yes it is great, however, it is not their greatest. My intuition tells me that you have probably not even listened to half of their discography. Animals is a far greater concept album than DSOTM and there are some who would label Syd Barrett era Floyd as superior to DSOTM.

Meh. Your intuition is only half right. I have listened to all of Floyd's discography, depending on how you define listen.

That is, I am not obsessive over Floyd the way I am over, say, Zeppelin or Bob Dylan. Those songs of Floyd's I like I like, but I'm not one to play their more obscure works because I generally don't care for them. But, I have heard them all.

I choose DSOTM as my favorite because Breathe, Time, Money, US and Them, Brain Damage, and Eclipse are great songs. I choose it as the best album because I cannot name another that has as many songs that are as good as those - not even ZOSO - and my criterion for the greatness album is the sum of the greatness of the individual songs.

I really like Nickelback right now, so i'll say that If Everyone Cared is the best song. Best music video I've seen is Savin' Me by Nickelback.

I can't deny that I like Californication too. I do live in California so I love the California bands.
