This year, I have had a class with computers throughout the whole schoolyear, meaning for an hour and a half every day (block scheduling) I stare at a screen about a foot away from my face. Sometimes the room is dark, making it worse.
The results? My left eye is still the good one, but not perfect. My right is even blurrier. I now must rely completely on the left. (those of you with glasses know that doing this will eventually require glasses, as the eye that you don't rely on gets weaker). When its dark and all of a sudden a bright light turns on it blinds me for like half a minute. When I wake up, after about 3 minutes I'm also blinded for 30 seconds. Sometimes I see little black or white scratches in the corner of my eye. They flash for a fraction of a second and then disappear (making me think a bug just scurried by. Sometimes while looking at a computer my eye twitches and occasionally it waters...
I'm scared cause I don't think I'll make it out of high school without glasses
(BTW I obviously look at a screen the most out of my family, but I'm the only one so far without glasses.)

You can find prescriptions online for both contacts and eyeglasses cheap

That's not a professional opinion however, you should do some research or consult an optometrist.
edit: Well after doing a bit of reading in wikipedia the syndrome i was referring to, cannot cause blindness in any case, but it could fairly f*ck up your vision in said eye.
Stopper wrote:Ermmm, I assume you've already seen an optician, static_ice?? If you haven't, I'd get there pronto.
Anyway, I think the idea that computer and video screens cause eye deficiencies is an urban myth. People used to blame short-sightedness on too much reading, but I don't think there's ever been any evidence for it.

If this is the case, the deterioration of your eyesight could well be genetic and not caused directly by staring at your computer screen, although it may exasperate the problem (but then even someone with perfect vision may experience similar temporary side-effects to those you have described, after prolonged exposure to a VDU etc).
My own case is actually not that dissimilar. Pretty much all of my blood relatives suffer from myopia (short-sightedness). So when I managed to reach the ripe old age of 13 without needing specs, I thought I'd been spared. But gradually my vision began to deteriorate until the inevitable happened & I was prescribed glasses. I managed to get away with not wearing them at school for another couple of years (by making sure I always sat near the blackboard or a least next to someone whose notes I could copy!), and then, thank goodness my Dad treated me to contact lenses, which I've worn ever since.
Contacts generally do work out more expensive than glasses, but now you can order them online, direct from suppliers, it's really not that big a drop in the ocean - I spend far more on pubbing/clubbing it in a month!.
Finally, whatever the cause of your problems, the most important thing is that you see a qualified optician. Regular checkups are advisable for anyone, as changes in the eye can be a warning sign of other health problems, including diabetes, heart disease & liver dysfunction. But with your family history and the nature of your college work, I'd say they are imperative.
Oops - didn't mean to make my reply so long, hope it helps though.
