What should I read tonight?

Postby qeee1 on Mon Jul 07, 2008 6:49 pm

So it's time to start a new book, the following are books I have that I've yet to read:

Some Guy - The Curious Incident of the Dog at Night Time
Douglas Coupland - JPod
William Burroughs - Naked Lunch
All the Booker 2007 nominees - http://www.reviewsofbooks.com/booker/
Jean Paul Sartre - Nausea

Alternative suggestions also welcome.

I've heard the Burroughs is great, but never read.
I'd give Satre a miss, continental philosophy -existentialism -utter garbage.

I actually love Sartre and would recommend it to anyone slightly interested.

Well I stayed up all night on the internet last night, so I didn't read anything, but I guess I'll start Nausea today, seeing as it's proved the most controversial.

Thats the one.
Its completely different from everything else I've ever read, but its still a very interesting book.
And its a pretty short book. You could probably finish it in one night if you read all night like I end up doing
Read it.

Read it.

It's a very easy read and provides an insight into the mind of autistic people - you'll always think differently about them afterwards

Go for the Curious Incident.
It means more to me than most, since I actually have the condition the character in that book has.

Sartre is tough going. Not sure if it's the translation I have or just his writing style, but it doesn't really draw you in or motivate you to continue reading much. Heavycola seems to have provided a pretty concise summary.

When I finish that I'll start curious incident... it looks a lot more accessible.

Read Jpod. Coupland is a motherfucking genius, and J is one of his best.

Whatever you do, don't read Burroughs. Unless, of course, you're a homosexual pedophile with an addiction to opiates, then it might be right up your alley.
