Here it has 2 .. it can mean a "loose" woman ... or it can mean a bum. It can also mean travelor, but not in modern usage.

No, this is another case how silimiar words mutate in circles. "Faggot" was orginally a contemptuous word for a woman or child. It is derived from fagot, which is bizzarely defined as a bundle of sticks.

Because it was the job of women and children to gather wood... and to some, that was about their worth.

Chips in the UK are called "french fries" in the US. I believe what we call chips here are called crisps (? -- thin crunchy fried potato slices).

And, I m told that "bloody" is not a phrase you would use around the Queen.

1. first off, it's biscuits, fool!

2. i s'pose you'r right there.

3. i think she'd be ok with it. i've always seen bloody as more of a PG-word than an actual swear.

1. Bisquick is a brand of biscuit mix,and I assume some people do spell biscuits as bisquits, you can find a few instances on the internet, but it is currently an incorrect spelling, unless of course, Betty Crocker adopts the word for only biscuits made with Bisquick.

2. Chips are bigger and thicker, while french fries are thinner. Any good Brit will know the difference!

3. The Queen has laser death-ray vision, and if you ever said the word BLOODY...she would fry you up like a big package of Jimmy Dean, stuff you in a tea strainer, and throw you in the deepest, darkest, dankest dungeon that the Tower of London has to offer!

No, the British "chips" resemble that of steak fries. Remember Gippy, there are several variations of fries.

I still stand by what I said in a previous thread, the Brits got this one wrong. The very first chip was created as a thinly cut, deep fried (or just very well cooked) circular shaped potatoes. Pretty much the same thing that the US calls the chip. Hence the name, "potato chips." :ugeek:

If that were true, her husband would never have lived to father all her children. He is a notorious coprolalic.

My favorite trans - pond word is the oh so innocent (in America) and oh so naughty (in UK) "fanny." If you were to stand in the middle of the Atlantic (a miraclous event no doubt but let's ignore that) and say to both sides of the pond, "OK ladies show us your fannies" everyone would be pointing in the same direction (west). Odd and ironic at the same time.

Many years ago my mother used to date an Englishman living in Bermuda. When he visited her in New York they went to see a musical. The heronine's name was "Fanny." She went through the entire performance wondering why his face was beet red. But that was back in a more innocent age.

I went to see an outdoor performance of Henry Fielding's "Joseph Andrews". The last line is something like "All my hope is in Fanny". Up until then, we'd all been able to take it quite seriously.

It is incorrect in Britain. In the US, it is used ... though yes, biscuit is the more common.. (remember potato/potatoe ?)
DaGip wrote:2. Chips are bigger and thicker, while french fries are thinner. Any good Brit will know the difference!

Not in the US. In the US, chips are the very thin, crunchy things you take on picnics and such. (though my husbnd likes to eat them in a bowl, with ketchup .. .or catsup.). I believe they are called "crisps" in the UK? Usually/traditionally, they are potatoes, but recently, you have begun seeing "veggie chips" (some are actually good ... many, not so good).

French Fries are the long, thin things you get hot at hamburger joints.. well most US restaurants. They are traditionally deep-fried, but more modern versions are baked. Most adults in the US know how to make them.

There are also "home fries" .. which, depending on where you live, can be something like chunky hashbrowns (sliced or diced potatoes, often with onions) OR deep fried slices (not quite crunchy ... probably about like what you say are "chips")... and possibly a few other versions as well.
