A game of "Risk"

Postby jonesthecurl on Mon May 12, 2008 12:06 pm

I introduced my kids to "Risk" at the weekend (it felt good to be master of the board for once!)

Now, the copy of the game I have now is one I picked up in a games auction a coupla years ago, and this was the first time it'd been dusted off. It's an old copy, a Waddingtons. I know that I've seen (and indeed sold, when I had my games business) a number of different editions, with different rules (including the dreaded "mission cards" nonsense).

Now, I found I couldn't remember how many armies you get to start with. So I looked it up in the rules, and this must be a seriously early edition - there was nothing there. Deal the cards, place one army on each, first player gets number of countries/3.

I arbitrarily decided that we all got five extra armies to place at the beginning. But can someone tell me the rules on that? :?:

You're right - I didn't think that would take me straight to what I wanted - I thought "risk" would give me all sorts of other options. But "Risk Rules" got me straight there.

Incidentally, it looks like the copy I have has the 1959 rules in.

There are a few different versions of the rules (maybe 5? google would help) and yeah, if I remember correctly your version was the first. I think they changed it soon, might have a rare edition on your hands.

Try the old monopoly trick, put a couple in your pocket, place them out evenly, remark "Oh look at that 42D naked women Hailing a Cab over there, then place pocket stolen armies in the middle east.

Closer examination shows a later (though not much) edition, with photocopied rules from the first edition - so no gold mine I'm afraid.
