Foods with two brandnames, really the same product?

Postby PLAYER57832 on Tue May 06, 2008 12:03 pm

Yet another food thread... :D

When I go from the East Coast to the West, there are several products that are exactly the same, but with different brand names. At one time, they were separate companies, with different formulations, but eventually the companies combined and shared formulas.

One example is Hellman mayonaise (East) and Best Foods (West). The labels, advertisements are all exactly the same ... only the name differs.

Can you think of any others?

Kind of not the same thing, but people in New England call milkshakes "fraps". Dunno where that comes from.

I was unaware.

Kind of like how most "luxury" cars are mostly just normal stock with a cool hood ornament and leather seats, and an additional $10,000 on the price tag

"Magners" hard cider is called "Bulmers" in Ireland. They changed the name for the UK to avoid confusion because there used to be a different hard cider there called "Bulmers".
Oddly enough, many English pubs now sell both "Magners" and (the modern) "Bulmers", not necessarily at the same price. Only a seasoned cider-drinking traveller will know they are exactly the same.

Oh, and they have "Leys" crisps (or rather chips, as the Americans call them) in the US. I'm not sure if they're the same thing, not being much of a chip/crisp eater.

Those crisps are also called "Lays" in the US. Also, Dreyer's ice cream in the Western US is called Edy's in the East.
