Earth Hour

Postby diddle on Sat Mar 29, 2008 4:12 pm

'Earth Hour is an international event that asks households and businesses to turn off their lights and non-essential electrical appliances for one hour on the evening of 29 March at 8 pm local time until 9 pm to promote electricity conservation and thus lower carbon emissions. It may also help reduce light pollution, and in 2008, coincides with the beginning of National Dark Sky Week in the USA.'

We just had ours, and as a direct result from it, my typing became completely incomprehensible to all of my current msn conversations. In the long run, it probably wasn't worth it.

Anywho, will you be participating in your local 'Earth Hour'?

I probably won't participate.
Turning off the lights won't change much, especially in my dorm because the flourescents don't work too well unless you hit the side of the light thing a couple of times...so I exist in near darkness most of the time when I am in my room.

I normally only have a dim lamp on, when I need light that is. Not much else except my laptop and sometimes the TV for music videos.

I did it and not because I felt that switcfhing off everyting for an hour changes much but it's the symbolism that we can adapt, we can conserve electricity and we can combat global warming.

I'm with Iz Man. Won't help anything anyway, and I'm not convinced of the terrible problem anyway.

Actually, if you think about it: Not participating is not just doing nothing, its actually harming the planet ever so slightly. By participating, you are letting the Earth do things naturally so you are actually not helping at all- just not harming.

Well, seeing as in my room, i have two power outlets, and i was home with only my older brother, we didn't have much on. i just turned everything except my Laptop and my Surround Sound comp speakers off... I have another 6 outlets due to a power board... But i don't see how one hour can make a difference, really. We'll make that up easy in winter just by our heaters and such... Its pretty stupid.

There was a big push for it here in Phoenix. So when the appointed hour came, I put on a ski mask and went up and down the street looking in the neighbors windows to see if they were observing Earth hour.

Everyone thought it was really funny except for the guy who popped off a couple of rounds in my general direction.

Notice the part where I said that doing that for an hour doesn't achieve much? But it proves we can cut back on carbon emissions.

Not really, as the street lights were still on, the electricity was still going, and cars were still around. Public places didn't have their lights off.

It didn't really make a difference. All you're doing to racking up the electricity bill because you're not using the power.

Oh god. It wasn't that the fact that we switched off stuff that mattered it was the symbolism!

i noticed a lot of americans think it won't help. obviously what we really need is gun hour. every american gets one hour to shoot as many americans as they want/can.

benefit:

the biggest polluting nation in the world would get behind efforts to reduce the human impact on the world by reducing humans. word.
