Confirmation by CCers on idea of Ancient History assessment.

Postby Skittles! on Tue Mar 18, 2008 6:21 am

Hey there. I'm currently in Year (or grade for you people from somewhere) 11 and I need to do an Ancient History assessment. Now, I have the idea, but I want to know if it'll be good or if it'll be "EPIC PHAILURE!"

We have to create our own archaeological site and write/type about it. Simple..

Now, I have to write/type it as a report. What I need to include is -
    - Two features, including what it is (duh) and what its purpose was at the ancient site
    - Two artefacts, such as a temple or wall/floor/roof
    - We must reference to specific dating methods applied to the objects of the excavation.
    - Any issues relating to ownership and custodianship of the past (such as the Trojan treasures found in Turkey)
    - Problems I overcame in the investigations (weather, government, etc.)
    - And the conclusion.

Now, what I was thinking is to do an ancient city situated in modern-day Morocco in the Charb-Chrarda-Beni Hssen region which was created by the Phoenicians as a trading colony to Cornwall, England (this is actual speculation of how far the Phoenicians traded, as some language or something was found at Cornwall).

Later on, let's say, 1050 B.C.E, the rich, trading city was sacked due to Celtiberians sailing over from Iberia. This will be supported by Iberian arrowheads. The supporting of the rich trading city will be from a rich boat created by the Phoenicians called a bireme. These will be the two artefacts.

The two features would possibly a temple devoted to Baal-Hammon, and narrow roads which mark around how big the city is. I'll expand on this in the report.

Problems could be that a big sand storm covered in a weathered away some archaeological artefacts, or that some sand got stuck in the boat skull. Another problem may be the government of Lebanon/Morocco believe they should have the artefacts due to it was a Phoenician city (for Lebanon) and that the city was situated in modern day Morocco.

Dating methods would obviously be dendrochronology due to the boat being wood, and possibly typology dating for the arrowhead.

So, ancient historians, does this sound like a good idea and what do you think I should change?

Oh yeah, and it has to be 1000 words maximum. =[

and tell me what you think of the idea
El Capitano says:
sounds pretty good.
El Capitano says:
as long as you're able to do the relevant research.
R.Anarchy says:
yeah, i think I will be. Like, I only decided the city was founded by Phoenicians today in the library whilst doing research, because they traded there and it suits with my time I want
El Capitano says:
thats useful
El Capitano says:
keep doing the resarch etc. and your project should be a success.
R.Anarchy says:
I forgot to add that it can only be 1000 words.
El Capitano says:
ah short.
R.Anarchy says:
yeah, which sucks.. cause i so could write more than 1000 words.
R.Anarchy says:
about what i'm choosing
R.Anarchy says:
lol, my friend has decided that he'll do an ancient civilisation which lived under the ground and feared the sun, and they all died out due to lack of nutrients from the sun, or something.
El Capitano says:
you'll just have to cut it down

Can't you look for a less problematic site? I mean you don't HAVE to overcome problems unless you want to.

Another problem would be the frailty of the boat. For instance, if you found it, it was probably stuck in the mud and therefore not decomposed much. But when you took it out of the mud, the water began to fall out of the wood and shrink the boat.

It happened on the Sea of Galilee once.

Just an idea.
