Homebrew

Postby bedub1 on Thu Mar 06, 2008 7:58 pm

So Samuel Adams is having a challenge....who can brew the best beer at home. I love beer and am an avid collector of beers I've never tasted before. Question is, should I buy the $150 brew equipment and have fun, or just realize I'm a lazy pile of shit that will buy it but if I try to brew it I'll just ruin it and burn down my kitchen, be arrested for cooking meth, jailed, and then raped by a big black guy named Bubba.

The question is, is it worth it to brew your own beer if ya are gunna get raped?

Well, rest assured, even if you buy the equipment you will not possibly win the contest.

why? because he's a guy? you sexist.

I say go for it bedub! worst case scenario is that you find out you have a passion of anal penetration, and your life will be changed profoundly yet wonderfully. Power to you, my dear friend, brew that poisonous alcohol and brew it well!

PS i've always hated the taste of sam adams.

Don't get into the trap my dad did; buying the gear but giving in and sucking down loads (exaggerating a scosh) of cheap and disgusting Bud, which I use as an ingredient in stuff like flapjacks (the only thing it is really any good for). All the major american breweries are like that, I stick to smaller, regional companies, with products like Alaskan Amber and Black Butte Porter. If you can afford to, go for it. Especially if you can grow your own barley (or wheat) and hops.

i've heard that anal penetration can be nice

i'm not gonna go out and try it though.

stay on the safe side, buy like 11 cases of natural light with the money you save from not buying the brew shit.

have a cc members party. remember to invite me

don't remember you had the party.

come back to the forums and ask this question again.

repeat steps 1-4 often

i know a guy who homebrews. took him several batches to really get it right. and even then, there's a fair amount of variation between batches, even with the same recipe. seems to be as much art as science.

but i wouldn't count on winning any contest until you've been homebrewing for a few years, at least. takes that long to really know what you're doing.

It is as much an art as it is a science. The way kits are made now, as long as you follow basic sanitation rules, you should come out with a tasty batch of homebrew.
You can get a starter kit such as this from http://www.northernbrewer.com for $73.99. Image
Now mind you'll have to get a kit and some bottles to go with this.
At http://www.williamsbrewing.com you can buy a complete starter kit like this one: http://www.williamsbrewing.com/BREWERY_ ... 013C73.cfm
for a little over $100.

You can make homebrewing as simple or as complicated as you want. Its all what you put into it. The chances of brewing an award-winning brew with your first batch with a starter kit are pretty slim; but I can tell you I didn't get into homebrewing to win competitions. I make beer because I love beer. I've made some excellent brews and I've made some that were so-so. I can honestly say I've never made one that's undrinkable.

It looks ok. I like the equipment it gives you to start off with: glass carboy, auto siphon, etc.
I personally am a bit cautious about the canned extracts like the kind this kit comes with, albeit Mutons has a good reputation though. With canned extract, you really can't be sure how old or fresh it is.
That's why I would recommend a starter kit from one of the two websites I posted earlier, either http://www.northernbrewer.com or http://www.williamsbrewing.com .
Both are big enough homebrew suppliers that their extract stock is turned around pretty quickly so you know you're getting fresh stuff.
You can also do a search for a local homebrew supply shop near you. Most homebrew shop owners are very happy to oblige in helping you get started.
