I saw the film for the second time the other day and think it is excellent.
The point is that the black father only took revenge because he knew that he would not get justice ( Missisippi with white defendents and an all white jury ) and so acted accordingly. Normally I would back the view that the law should prevail rather than vigilante action, but its difficult if racism prevents the law from working properly.
