Football (good)

Postby reminisco on Wed Feb 13, 2008 1:19 pm

i just noticed there's a thread called, "Football (real)", and it's about Soccer.

so, i get it... it's a small attempt to make a big deal out of nomenclature, and go all anglophile all over the forum

so this thread is about Football (good), as in American Football, or the Football that Rules.

so, with that said, who does everyone root for?

I'm an Eagles fan.

a boo yeah!

(ps. i actually do like soccer, and watch the world cup compulsively every four years. i even watch the MLS games when they're on and i happen to be watching. if Philly got an MLS team, as has been discussed, i'd go to games regularly.. at least as regularly as i go to baseball games).

(pps. i'm kind of just trying to goad on the Brits here, so fellow Americans, help me out and post lots about FOOTBALL (GOOD), instead of Football (real). a boo yeah!)

i could have sworn i saw it too
but as it turns out it was just a clever ad for cigarettes.

lol, how is American football better than football (soccer)?
its like rugby for wimps
also could you tell me why its called football when you spend half the game running with the ball in your hands headlong into the other team?

If you wanted to get into semantics about nomenclature as it applies to body parts, you should call soccer/football "everything-but-your-armsball." Let's just get over ourselves and discuss the sports we enjoy.

I would much prefer everyone talking about American football here rather than loads of other separate topics.

I'm a New York Jets fan, although, like Reminisco i am also a huge football (soccer) fan too. And I know from the soccer threads that soccer/football fans hate it when American-football fans trash english football, so lets bear that in mind english-football fans.

Sure. Originally the game had almost no forward passes, so aside from running or tossing, the only thing you did was punt or kick field goals. So their options were runball, tossball, kickball, football, or something completely unrelated. Kickball is a kindergarten sport, and runball and tossball sound pretty lame. They figured that it would never reach the high level of popularity it has now, so just called it football.

Admittedly there's a topic called Football (real), so the gauntlet was already kind of thrown down.

There sure is no shortage of American bashing on this site. Who really give a crap if its called football, too? Like it matters. Anyway, lets talk NFL.

I am a diehard pats fan. I've been a pats fan since I was 6, the year they lost the Super Bowl in the most spectacular fashion in history. I was a pats fan through the 1-15 and 2-14 seasons in the late 80s/early 90s. I hated Drew Bledsoe, and I think my firstborn son will either by Tedy or Tom. That being said, I now live in Philly and have become a bit of an Eagles fan, too. I just don't get philly fans....they are SO fair weather! So, Remi, what's your take on Donovan?

And what do others think about this tool of a commissioner, Goodell? I think he's on a massive power trip and he's gotten to the point where he's hurting the game. Oh, and I hate the Jets. They suck and Eric Mangina should be beaten with reeds.

not likely..

my family came over here 300 years ago. it's remained mostly English blood since (some Native American and Dutch mixed in since).

but we'd still be back in England, probably kicking ass and taking names.

haha. i grew up a Jets fan, and as a result, hate the Pats. i can root for two teams, cause they're not in the same division.

when the Eagles played the Jets this past season, it was hard to watch.

McNaab is in the twilight of his career, but as Elway proved, one can still win the superbowl. I'd love to see the Eagles go all the way, and for McNaab to get a ring.

as for the Pats, I refer you to this article. consider it's implications.

As mentioned in the article, the stuff is slap on the wrist kind of stuff. It's blown out of proportion because people generally hate teams as successful as the Patriots.

I'm personally a Bears fan, though. Hopefully next season will be a bit less embarrassing than the last one.
