World Beer Review: Mexico

Postby Iz Man on Wed Feb 06, 2008 12:38 pm

Certainly the agave plant has provided Mexico with its most popular beverage, but barley and hops have also made their way south of the border.

Moctezuma Noche Buena
Region: Province of Veracruz, Mexico
Style: Munich Dark Lager
Alcohol: 6.0% ABV

ImageThe name means "good night", referring to Christmas Eve. This is the time when Mexicans have their Christmas dinner. Noche Buena, a strong, dark lager, is one of the tastiest beers from Mexico. It has an amber-brown color, and is very smooth, with malt sweetness and hoppy dryness in its finish.

Mmm, sounds great. I live quite close to Mexico, and so nearly all of the Mexican national beers available at the average Northern Mexican bar are easily found here. I think I've seen this Monteczuma Noche Buena at my local speciality beer store, and will check it out.

I drink Negra Modelo much more than any other Mexican beer.

It's easily available in 24-packs, has a nice gentle, yet sufficiently substantial flavor. Really, I like it, probably, because it's very similar to the German and Czech bocks that dominate brewing in Central Texas. And I love love love me some bock.

I also drink XX Oscura (Ambar) when I can find it. It's very, very similar to Negra Modelo.
