If you were to adopt, would you choose a child from your own country or from a foreign country? Why?

I dont think i would mind which county they were from.

I have never considered adoption (because i am not ready to take care of another life yet) so i dont really know but i imagine i would want to feel some sort of connection with the child. Therefore i think the country would be irrelevant.

Sorry, that was a crap answer

I actually converted around page 198. Unfortunately, I converted to satanism.

It's expensive no matter what, but I believe I would adopt a foreign baby.

Even though that may mean from eastern Europe or Russia.

I personally think its a bit patronising to adopt children from third world countries (a la Madonna). I have no problem with people raising children of a different ethnicity or mixed race couples, but I it feels wrong to me to take a child thousands of miles away from their homeland and to raise them in a completely new cultural background when they have no say in the matter.
Okay I believe the people doing the adoption have the best interests of the children at heart, but it must be disturbing for the children to be cut off from any link to their past (however young they are). Will they ever see any of their relatives again? Even orphans usually have some link to the community in there extended family.
Will their adopted parents endeavor to teach them their naive language, religion and customs? I think not in most cases.
It really reminds me of the old fashioned parental colonialism in the British Empire "we can help these savages" or the taking Native American kids half way across a continent to teach them how to wear trousers and to love Jesus.
I would love to see the opinion of someone raised in this way. Are they grateful for the "escape" from potential poverty, or do they miss their link to their cultural heritage?

As depressing as that is... I understand where you are coming from.

But a child that stays in one of those third world countries will doubtfully live to adulthood.

I understand this, but the solution is not to take a couple of "lucky" people to the West, but to help the developing countries healthcare and welfare systems and to help the entire countries economy.

Isn't it better to adopt a child, or even a dog or cat, as opposed to letting it sit to rot?

I, as one person, can't change a foreign nations economy, but I could afford to adopt one child and give it a better life. Just like you do when you adopt a pet from an animal shelter.

(Please no one give me shit for the analogy. I like animals more than most people. ) 8)

I'm much more in favour of the kind of "adopt a school" or "buy a goat" type schemes if you want to contribute on a small scale (cause I do I agree that its hard to affect the big picture: though there's more ways than you think - using your vote, your consumer influence etc). These schemes have their problems too (does he really want a goat?!) but at least you can still directly contribute to someones life/education.

Can we give you shit for saying that?

Although adopting a child from a third world country is more beneficial due to the possibility of starving etc i think only adopting children from those countries is not entirely fair to those who need adoption closer to home.

Many kids up for adoption have the potential to starve. Even worse these kids may be emotionally traumatised by aggressive or dismissive parents.

So i think often the 1st world countries kids may need adopting as much as the third world.
