Music lovers - Find similar songs/artists

Postby Heimdall on Thu Jan 17, 2008 1:31 am

I was listening to a song on my PC and i liked it so much that i wanted to find other similar songs. Well after Googling for 20 minutes, i found this cool website called pandora.com that let's you type in an artist's name and it will line up a whole bunch of similar artists. I'm still testing it, but so far so good. Check it out, i think they allow users to give their input.

I've been toying with the idea of creating a website like this for a few years now. Glad that someone has done it! :D

Alas, I can't view it as it's restricted to North America.

Try http://www.music-map.com/ it's in german but using it shouldn't be a problem, type in the name of the artist/band and you'll get a "map" of other artists users that liked the band you typed in also like.

This particular one from MeDeFe's site caught my eye...

One cannot talk about Rock 'n roll without mention of the brilliant and dedicated lyricist and singer; the late Bon Scott, or the deep, throaty scream of Brain Johnson, who is INDEED back in black; needless to mention the insanely talented, insanely popular, and just plain insane, lead guitarist, songwiter, frontman, posterboy, and all-around heatseeker, Angus Young; and don't forget his brother, Malcolm a.k.a. "The Riffmaker" who is a talented songwriter has done many incredible things in his time (Such as punching out Black Sabbath's bassist... way to go, Malcolm!), and the off-beat beat of long-time veteran; bassist Cliff Williams, heck, even Phil Rudd deserves a little credit, after making that incredible comeback on Ballbreaker; along with production greats, like Harry Vanda & George Younng, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, and others. All these giants have come together to make what is undoubtedly the greatest rock band ever.

Favorite song: For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)
Favorite singer: Brian Johnson
Favorite album cover: Powerage

For Those about to rock, We salute you, and we also salute AC/DC for 30 years of High Voltage Rock 'n Roll!!!

I don't like it. As soon as I'm ready to click on a name, it moves. :x

Nice site. It could do with having a few more bands on its database, and yeah maybe a better interface, but it's a great idea.

Pandora is slowly dying... I switched to seeqpod but they have low selection. Musicology.com is alright... you choose songs based on genre, energy level, and mood.

But I think I'll eventually stick with last.fm :)

Pandora is really good and very legally conscious, since doing what they do is really hard to do without breaking the law.

Pandora is an excellent site, it's kinda like old-school Launchcast. A great place to find new music.

Just listen to the Smiths and Gene.
All other bands are essentially superfluous.

Gene are just a Smiths rip-off. That would also make them superfluous.

At the risk of sounding superfluous myself, and given that I was already chided for posting something apparently everyone knew, there is also Last.fm

The thing I like least about pandora is that a station based on a band is always pretty much made up of the first thing you think of when you think of similar artists... At least with the ones I've tried.
