My dad, who's from Spain, works at MIT because of the research and the amount of gov't funding.

Yeah, I'd say the reseach is ofcourse part of it, as is the chance to meet other great minds, but all of it comes down to money, which the USA universities probably have a lot off.

Well, I'm not sure about other places, but the University Professors here get payed fairly well, it also helps that it is the only one in the state (University football games here are really popular, to say the least), though it also puts more pressure on them, mainly because many of the classrooms don't technology that, say, the local high school or the community college. Which can make things a bit more difficult in some instances, but the professors (and retired ones) are pretty well respected within the community, one of the retired ones being a close family friend.
"Eh, whatever."

I was really hoping money wasn't what it was about. At the larger universities, the professors do get paid very well. But, particularly relative to commercial jobs, professorships at smaller universities aren't paid nearly as well. The only draw there is to teach. And why not teach at home? I suppose it's enough to live on, which might be better than elsewhere. I dunno.

Well, I don't know about the smaller universities. But by money I mean that people can do more expensive research and publish stuff, and money ofcourse means there are other smart people drawn there. It's not only about how much you make.

Well, that comes back to the original point. That might be why American universities are "better." Do we poor more money into them than say Germany, or even England? The French university issues seem to back that up.

Well... I don't know. But I think they probably do. I don't know about germany and stuff, but our universities are way less impressive than yours. I think private funding helps a lot.
My university does not, for example, feature any sports or even a campus where students live. It's basically just a school were you go and learn and study. Ofcourse I'm looking at universities in the movies, but I would say US universities probably have a lot more money to spend.
