The Odyssey - Ithaca/Ionia

Recently I was kicking around the idea of doing a land mass type of map as work on my Monsters! map begins to wrap up and while looking at world maps I thought of "The Odyssey" by Homer as a possible basis for where I might like to place a map. The map would include the fictional things such as the cyclopse and hydra and have a mix between real world and fantasy.

From Wikipedia...

The Odyssey is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad, the other work traditionally ascribed to Homer. The poem is fundamental to the modern Western canon. Indeed it is the second—the Iliad being the first—extant work of Western literature. It was probably composed near the end of the eighth century BC, somewhere in Ionia, the then Greek-controlled coastal region of what is now Turkey.

This would be cool, I would def. want this map to play. But it would have to have a lot of references to the places visited in the Odyssey and not just look like a map of the med.

And that Trojan war map is awesome... some one needs to pick that up.

I'd play this definitely. How about one way attacks to the next island? Or if the xml changes, attack random island. That'd be just like the story where he has no idea where the hell he is.

Well part of the story is the suitors living in Odysseus' house and trying get his wife (penelope), then Telemachus' revenge against them. Perhaps there could be the sea and the various places he visits, plus something going on at Ithaca... maybe an objective like finding Penelope or something.

I would love to integrate the story as much as possible with the map. If random events or moving objectives were part of the game engine I would surely include them. But lets think within the boundaries of the current game engine. I have a bunch of notes that I will type up later and possibly mock up a map and gauge peoples interest then as to weather I should continue development or not.

There are loads of versions of different myths - leaves total artistic interpretation for the carto.

I have a diagram with some very interesting gameplay worked-out if a carto wants to join me in developing a mythical world map.

I have combined the ideas of many myths in an objective-based map idea:
