As a matter of fact, there already IS a Middle-Earth Risk map. See, they kinda made a bunch of LOTR based games when the movies came out (Monopoly, Chess, Risk, etc.). I actually own it, and it's not bad. Now let me see...
Here's a picture of it (sorry it isn't bigger, the site I'm hosting it from has size limits). It's actually rather interesting to play. There are rivers and mountain ranges that divide the map up, with only a few bridges to cross the rivers (mountains require to go around), and sea invasions functioning a little different as well (sea travel is obviously only on the western coast of Middle-Earth, so sea invasions go from a port territory to the next port territory in line, and vice versa). The biggest change is the introduction of fortresses. At certain locations (Minas Tirith, Rivendell, Minas Morgul, Isengard, etc), these fortresses give an extra point to defense and, during a player's reinforcement phase, produce one extra unit on every fortress you control. To counter this, everyone also has a leader unit which gives an attack bonus.
Now, Lackattack, if you want to make a map out of this, I have a full-sized version as well (which the names are easy to read on). If you want, I can email this to you. Alternatively, if anyone artistically gifted (not me, I can't do crap with anything artistic) wants to take a crack at turning this into a workable map, please by all means just ask and I'll email the full-sized to you as well.
Of course i know there's the LOTR risk board game already

I agree. I love the Lord of the rings Map, I also love the addition of mission cards etc. I'm just a risk addict.

Actually, mission cards have been packed with Risk games for as long as I've ever owned a version, which would be at least the last 10 years.
LOTR incorporates Ring cards, which control how long you have to play the game for, and also gives you extra reinforcements and the like. Personally, I think that since Wizards of the Coast got involved in the production of Risk variants, the "expansions" have taken a turn towards the Magic: The Gathering side of gaming, but that's more of a personal gripe than anything else.
Besides, if you don't like it, there's always Classic Risk, not to mention Conquer Club!!
But yeah, the Middle Earth map would be great. For that matter, has anyone seen the Godstorm map? Europe and the Mediterranean area...
Wicked.

hahaha no doubt it's close to a full-time job for lack... A few friends and I played on the Middle Earth board for 8 hours, and there were still a few territories that NEVER saw any action. We finally had to declare the game a draw, the damn felines don't let us continue games past one session.

what can I say? A Middle Earth map would be awesome. This one is too tall (it is nicer when you don't have to scroll, and I want to support 1024x768 resolution). I intend to have a 4th map designed in a month or two (and Asia map is currently being improved) but I should also open up the map specifications to allow for member-designed maps. There could be a forum where map designers can post their work and get feedback from the community.

Yeah, the size is a problem... probably have to reorganize the map and merge some of the territories to make it fit. And YP, I sent the email, so good luck making it work!

that would be REALLY unfortunate..... This Map is an amazing Map.... and it shouldn't be reorganized..... ifyou decide to support the map you should just accept the fact you'll have to scroll on it. There is a reason I like this map much better than the first LOTR Risk Map that came out.... this one is bigger and is better balanced. It also lends itself well to team play as that is how it is setup to be played. If you haven't played LOTR Risk trilogy edition then you really MUST play it before you get into trying to make it available on here. It is one of the best balanced versions I've personally seen.
Props so far on the site. If you are going to support this map though I suggest you support it to it's full extent, complete with it's cards and rules.

And hellooooooooo LAWSUIT!
Maybe there's a way to get the map itself up there... But even if lack had the time to program in everything else (and it would take him months to work out all those cards), I'm pretty sure he'd be getting more than a few Cease and Desists.
Not to poop on the party, just trying to think realistically about copyright infringements Now that he's taking money for the site, we've got to be careful about things like this.

I definately don't think scrolling down is that big of a deal, and if people don't like doing that for some reason then they can just play a different map.
but if it really was a big deal for some reason that I am currently unaware of, someone that would be willing to take the time could perhaps turn the map sideways and repaint all the words and logos, etc.
Re: copyright infringements, is it still illiega if you redesign the map to look diffent but still function exactly like the original - and then rename everything of course

I could get my hands on a better sized one but it would have to be sized down. Anyone interested?

Howdy folks, just thought id chime in & update ya on the LOTR map i have been working on, supplied by crimson_knight. It is looking pretty good, but i am encountering trouble with the size of the countries for the given graphic specs. since there are so many of them. I am going to combine a several of them as i see will fit, & work it out. It will probably be about 2 weeks before i have the time required to get it ready for you here at the foundry, & also write the xml. So until then, best regards & see you at the games!

This might have already been said but there already is a middle earth risk map, and the realm of middle earth is copyright the Tolkin family, this could put you in a sticky legal place unless you have permission, which btw I know you don't since I believe it's EA that has exclusive rights to make video games based on the lord of the rings books. Don't get me wrong I'd like to see it, but I'd also like conquer club to not get taken offline by a bunch of guys in suits.

Not the men in suits!! Freakshow does have a point you might wanna figure out the whole legal thing before you get too far into the map making...

Anyone ever think about making a Lord Of The Rings map?
