What about something like this? (a combination of reggie mac's map and the original classic)
Apologies to the map makers for wrecking this.. as you can see i have absolutely no talent for this

I also propose adding New Zealand to Oceania
renaming Gt Britain to United Kingdom as well as other territory name changes (just to lazy to do it)

I think there needs to be a map that can try and capture "the original" RISK board game. I have always been a big fan of the Classic map.
I must say that the ideas presented by reggie mac and Tee Gee are on the money.
A further twist on Tee Gee's suggestion of bringing New Zealand in as a territory may also be to add in Cuba with a link from Eastern US and Central America, and possibly Tahiti into Oceania linked from New Zealand, Peru and Central America.
We definatley need a defacto "Classic Map" as the current one (and no offence intended to the brains trust behind this development, I understand the copyright issues attached to it) feels a bit like Chinese Checkers.
Unfortunately I lack the ability to generate a graphical image of the map, but I think my ideas would extend ok off the one prepared by Tee Gee.

You might as well not waste your time until we get world exactly how much would need to be changed...

I think the numbers/links of 'areas' needs to stay the same, so by dropping eastern Australia, adding new zealand, and moving the links to there you would still have the same number of 'areas' and links, but would be different, simply for the fact NZ has never been on a risk board, half the time its not even drawn in, make a few name changes, re-draw some borders etc and bingo you have a something that is not breaching copyright.

Is it really needed to shift the map to avoid copyright? Having Asia in the middle instead of Europe and Africa looks very odd...
By the way, I agree with the name. My personal suggestion is, make the map the same look as World 2.1 but with territories equivalent to Classic and call it World 1.0. Just like reggie_mac said, change East Australia for New Zealand, and so on. Some changes could be:
Western Australia --> Australia
Eastern Australia --> New Zealand
Congo --> Guineas
Western Europe --> Iberia
Northern Europe --> Central Europe
Great Britain --> British Isles
Ukraine --> European Russia
North Africa --> Atlas
Central America --> Mexico
Western US --> West Coast
Eastern US --> East Coast
And so on.

Actually, I think Maghreb would be a better new name for North Africa.

I am not going to argue about the territories names. I was just providing some examples

What's wrong with Sarah Desert?
Anyway let's wait until we get word about what needs changing, etc.

This isn't helping guys...
The site has decided that the Classic map has to come down... Lack appears to have decided that we're not going to be able to use a world map with the classic gameplay.
Please be patient, while we get our heads around what we're going to do next...
