saving private ryan map

Postby DarthBlood on Sat Sep 06, 2008 8:50 pm

i was watching saving private ryan, and the captain was listing a ton of places, when i got this idea. im not really sure if we already have the map here, as i dont know shit about europe, and i havent played a lot of europe specific maps. if it IS here, then maybe we can make this a 2.0?

gameplay:
since it's based on spr, you can make the objective of the game to find private ryan (or kill off all of your enemies).

the map will always be fog of war, cuz like in the movie, you have no damn idea where ryan is.

each time you play, the location of ryan will be randomized. the territory that ryan is at will have a lot of neutrals (like i know sanctuary of aor2 has).

a few territories will act as private ryan decoys. in the movie, there are several places they visit where they hope ryan might be, but it usually ends up being wrong. like, theres a time when they find james FREDERICK ryan, instead of james FRANCIS ryan. if you conquer the place, you get an immediate 5 or so bonus. but every turn after that, you lose two units. this is cuz when they first find a place where ryan might be, they get all excited and happy, thus morale boost. but when they find out he isnt there, they get all depressed and mopy, causing morale to go down.

some territories have a sniper (with symbols to represent it). the sniper can then kill units up to 2 territories away. so if the map looked like this: A(*)-B-C, with A bordering B, B bordering and A and C, and C bordering B, A can kill C because A is the sniper. its like the knight from waterloo, if you still dont understand what im saying.

there's also artillery. artillery has its own symbol, and it can attack up to five spaces away. as a result, this also means there's less artillery on the map than snipers. after artillery completely wipes out the enemy territory, it becomes neutral. this is just standard bombardment.

another special thing is the medic. the symbol for this is a red cross. if you own this territory, you get an extra bonus, since the medic saves lives.

there should also be one dropzone territory. if you own this territory, the closest three territories that belong to you get one army on it. you can think of this as the airtrooper drops, since in the movie, most of the people miss their drop zones and end up scattered around.

...i cant think of any more ideas for the map right now...

id love to hear your opinions on this.

I really like some of the gameplay ideas, but I think several of them can't be implemented under the current XML.

Is saving private Ryan based on a true story? Or is it a piece of fiction?

Assuming it was based on a true story then I don't think copyrigt would be a concern that people are making it out to be!
What do you know about map making, bitch?

if there's any idea of mine that wouldn't work, i think it would be the dropzone. everything else i suggested had a similar idea on other maps. like the artillery and sniper. medic is just a simple bonus, so im sure that could work out.

...maybe the randomizing of ryan's location would be the problem?
if that is a problem, then i have another idea. ryan's location can be located at the very center of the map, like the upcoming map oasis. his location would still have a ton of neutrals. and if it IS made this way, then we can get rid of the decoy locations.

I personally don't like it. You can not randomize territories which are objectives, and plus it may be infront of a players start position.

Or maybe I just hate all Americans and American products.

The title Saving Private Ryan is copy written, the story is not, the screen play is though.

Easy way to get out of copyright probs...don't refer to PVT. Ryan...call it "Lost Patrol "...and your objective would be to locate and relieve the lost members holding a key crossroads {not a bridge} . Kinda like a melange of the Battle of the Bulge / the Lost Battalion {WW1}, and D- Day paratroop drop zone clusterf*ck ....since these are historical events, who cares about Copyright BS ?

Merker...I don't know how old you are...but it's your free choice to hate Americans & American products due to the US saving Australia from speaking Japanese courtesy of the Battle of the Coral Sea, and Guadalcanal...if you haven't heard of them, then I suggest Aussie education has slipped.

Or you are just an ungrateful, pampered , spoiled , liberal. You are free to resign from this American product club anytime you care to... if you back up your principles with actions !

Or are you just flapping gums in the wind, mate ?

About the snipers, would they be able to conquer territories or just bombard? It would make more sence if the just bombard since an actual sniper doesn't take any ground it just clears out areas for other troops to move into.
