I had this idea but never posted it: take a standard openning variation and arange the pieces like that across the board. You can attack in the standard 4 directions, plus along the pieces. onuses will be ranks, files, all black/white pieces, all kings, all queens, all rooks, all pawns...

I would do something similar to that, but not quite.

Take a board mid-game. All squares with pieces on them can attack only as their piece can attack. All empty squares can attack in the 4 directions adjacent to them. The bonuses would be for holding all of each color, or all pieces of each color - both white rooks, for example.

Actually, this looks almost identical to what you wrote now.

Yes, a board with the movements controled by the pieces which are on it is more fun. Then a game well developped sounds great, so that all pieces could move a bit. Now, There's no use to have a strict mid-game spreading of the pieces, just the pieces put in a way that makes it more playable: I am thinking for instance about having the whole 32 pieces and a symmetrical layout.
For the bonuses: white pawns, black pawns (8 each), rooks, knights, bishops, crowned heads (queens and kings) (4 each), unoccupied white squares, unoccupied black squares (16 each)

I made up a list of map ideas, and this was my first one.

I had a few ideas with regards to this.

1) Initial startup placements, Rows with pieces are assigned at start, center tiles are neutral. Pawn places can only attack forward 1 or 2 places. All back row pieces can attack regardless of occupation (Rooks can attack every square in front of them, but no others. same with Bishops, Queens, Knights and King). King can be interesting for 1v1 games as it can be made into a victory condition.

Bonuses: King +5 (because of lack of movement), All White pieces, All Black Pieces, All of one type (all rooks, etc), All pawns, etc.

2) Game in play. Setup a game as it's is in progress. All pieces attack as they would in #1

3) No Pieces: make a board with no special pieces, but impassable borders through the middle (simulating pawn movement) and other places simulating movement boundaries.

There is a chess map in development. Have a look and see what you think.

Yeah, sorry, but I beat ya to it. :P

This idea is suggested a lot, though. Feel free to comment about the current project. :)
