Israel Map - your opinion needed :-)

Hi Guys,

After chatting to cairnswk I had the idea to propose a map for Israel, the holyland.
I think this could be a cool map with some bombardment features (from lebanon to the northern parts and from Gazza to the southern parts, maybe even add some infiltrations from the west bank to spice it up

2 terr. In the northern part – east / west lebanon – these terr. Can bombard the blue terr.
3 terr. In the golan hights (Mount Hermon, center Golan and Southern Golan)
haifa and north (it’s the small bay about 100 km from the top) would be divided into 6 – the finger of galilee, the sea of galilee, east Galilee , west galilee, Haifa district and the Izreal valley.

Add another few terr. For the west bank (according to major palestinian cities), maybe make something special around jerusalem (maybe unconquerable? But if it’s last then you lose? Or add a special bonus?

Spread some terr across the coast as the coastal strip (that were tel aviv is guys…)
Maybe put airfields that can bomb targets…
Add some terr around gaza that can be bombarded, add another few terr in the southern desert region known as the “Negev”.

Ofcourse, this is just a draft from the top of my mind, open to suggestions and ideas

I don’t have a clue how to program in xml, php or all the rest of that stuff, so it would have to be done by a valiant volunteer

Waiting for your input guys

I would have to see a draft before commenting. So are you doing the graphics yourself? Are you up for it? There's plenty of people to help with xml, but not many willing to take on a new graphics project.

It might be a good place to do a time themed map for a particular war. Yom Kippur War or somesuch.

Make it during Yon Kipper with Israel holding Golan Heights and the Sinai Peninsula.

Or you could make it Greater Palestine, which includes Palestine, modern day Israel and Jordan (used to be called Trans-Jordan)

Maybe the 6 day war blitz?

But again, this is just the first basic draft for an idea. Someone will have to do the hard work...

Okay, I'm not religious at all so don't think I'm going on some sort of crusade here (hehe), but I'd prefer to see a map of Israel during the time of the Twelve Tribes, something like this:

Mind you, if you wanted to go with the modern map, I think gameplay-wise, it would be good to include the disputed countries too, like Egypt, so Gaza must be held to get Israel bonus or Egypt bonus. Kind of like the disputed zones in the Iraq map.

Folks have gotten bogged down before trying to make an Israel map, because there are a lot of gray areas... a map of contemporary geography is hardly "just plain" because different countries have a different sense of what belongs to whom, and by making a "terrorist" map you'll be representing somebody's very politicized point of view - one side's terrorist is another side's martyr. Just by calling it an "Israel" map you have already discounted the point of view of one billion people who, historically, have not recognized that Israel is a state.

To be as objective as possible in creating a map of the region, the first thing I would do is go back in time and select a historically era or event. E-I-PI's idea of going way back and doing the twelve tribes would be interesting, as would going further back and ding the entire Levant region. Rolling along through time you could represent 1st century Judea, Byzantine Palestinia, or early 20th century British Palestine. Representing the post-partition region would also work if you chose a specific date - 1948 Independence, pre- or post-Six Day War, etc, but be careful about you call each reigon.

The Iraq map does a good job representing conflict areas and 'evil do'ers'. It can be made impartial by using the names of groups not subjective names like 'terrorists' or 'oppressors'.

And this is why it will be next to impossible to make a map of the Holy Land. Normally the Foundry is a somewhat friendly place and mostly free of vitriolic spam, until we touch on subjects that are a little too close to people's hearts to be discussed rationally.

In fact, I'm going to lock this thread before it becomes a problem.
