Olympics

So I was thinking this morning of an Olympics maps with a bit of a game play twist (sure to have complaints if it ever happened).

I'm looking at a world map with each tert being a city that has hosted the olympics. So For instance there would be a tert called Bejing '08. Cities that have hosted twice would have two terts such as Los Angeles '84 and Los Angeles '32.

The twist on Gameplay then would be that you could only attack territories within 4 years of your tert. So for instance, The Bejing '08 Tert could attack Athens '04 tert but not the Seoul '88. Athens '04 Could attack Bejing '08, and Sydney '00 (as well as Turin '06 and Salt Lake City '02). We'd have to allow for the cancelled olympics so that London and St. Moritz in '48 would be able to attack Berlin and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in '36 as well as Antwerp in '20 being able to attack Stockholm in '12. The earlier olympics won't have as much to defend from so there might be an advantage to having them-not sure yet.

My thought is to have no continent bonuses at all although I'm open to suggestions on that.

Anyway, I thought I'd throw the rough ideas out there before trying to put together a map.

berterer2002...i tried an Olympics theme on the Sydney Metro (previously Sydney 2000) and no-one took to it.

That doesn't mean your suggestion wouldn't be successful, but i think the connection between attacking someone and Olympics doesn't exactly fit the "take a territory" theme. Only saying this from previous experience.

Fair enough, I've never done a map. Don't know how really but I've got a nephew with an idea who wants me to help him do one (he has one all drawn out etc) and I'm not sure where to send him then I was thinking that maybe I should just do one. Since I'm watching the olympics I thought it would be interesting plus I always enjoy a little history on the maps as well.

would you include denver 74 even though they declined the invite to host it?

No. First off the Olympics weren't held in '74 so your year is off somewhere they second, I'm not doing Berlin 1916, Tokoyo or Sapporo 1940 or London 1944 and they were actually set to host, why would I do Denver that never was going to host?

well... if you have turin and salt lake city, you would realize that 74 was a winter olympics year, i believe. and denver got the nod, but rejected the ioc....

No you are incorrect on the year. Up until 1992 the summer and winter olympics were played in the same year. Then in 1994 the winter olympics split off to be on different years.

Not to insult anyone at all, but to clear it up: The Winter Olympics which Denver rejected and which went to Innsbruck accepted seems to have been in 1976. Clicky for info

Winter Olympic games held from 1924 to 1992 (Albertville, France) the same years that Summer Olympic games did. In 1986, the International Olympic Comimmittee decided to reschedule the Winter Games, so the "dephased" ones began with Lillehammer '94, and hold every 4 years since then.

I do not like this, your attack paths are in two directions, nowhere nearly enough, I say you should be able to attack adjacent, and 4 years terits, then I would love it.

Actually most will be 4. For instance the 2004 Athens games could attack Beijing 08, Turin 06, Salt Lake '02 and Sydney '00. Its only the early Olympics-before the winter games came around-that will have limited attack paths.

i think this is an idea that will be popular for about two weeks every four years... discuss this again in December and nobody will really care - just like nobody cares who the best synchronized swimmers in the world are for 3.95 years at a time.

wait, nobody EVER cares who the best synchronized swimmers are - bad example. ;)

It's the Russians... and they are GOOD! Perfect scores this year. What a show.

What if you could attack when it's the same city? Otherwise what you have is a list of numbers with attack lines between close ones. Terits = {x /in Z : 4|x, 1896<= x <=2008, x /notin {1916, 1940, 1944}} Attacks = {(x, y) : |x - y| <=4} :D

Spain (2 silvers, not perfect but also quite good) also cares :)

Would you consider connecting in some way Olympiads in the same country?

Cities with 2 or more Olympics: Athens (1896, 2004), Paris (1900, 1924), London (1908, 1948, 2012), LA (1932, 1984), Lake Placid (1932W, 1980W), Innsbruck (1964, 1976), Stockholm (1912, 1956).

Countries with 2 or more Olympic cities: US (St. Louis, LA, Atlanta, Lake Placid, Squaw Valley, Salt Lake City), Germany (Berlin, Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen), Australia (Melbourne, Sydney), France (Paris, Chamonix, Grenoble, Albertville), Russia (Moscow, Sochi), Japan (Tokyo, Sapporo, Nagano), Italy (Rome, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Turin), Canada (Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver), Norway (Oslo, Lillehammer).

Although countries change on time (Moscow was in USSR, while Sochi will be in Russia, e.g.), so maybe that's not a very good idea...

if you wana do an olympics theme (which i do thought about with the olympic bug  ) perhaps make a track and field one... it would look similar to circus maximus i suppose, but have the different race length, and in the center the verious field events... more thought to be put into it then I can right now  but it could be neat

I've thought about the same country olympics and maybe that's the way the bonuses would end up but I kind of wanted the game play to be different than just grabbing the country next to you.

Although countries change on time (Moscow was in USSR, while Sochi will be in Russia, e.g.), so maybe that's not a very good idea...

So I had a thought about the layout Instead of making it another map of the globe with the cities labeled we could use the Olympic rings

Something like this:

Image

Only encompassing the entire spectrum of host cities.

There are two ways it could go from here if we progress further. Either the rings could be kept in sets of 5 and have each ring within a group be able to attack each of the others with a link of one to the next set of rings or we could just interlock the entire way. It woudn't be 5 rings but rather just a long string of rings where each could attack the touching 3 or 4 rings only.

This would eliminate the confusion from people about having things like 2 LA terts that can't attack each other.

There are several different ways to go for bonuses. It could be by decade (so holding the 1890s would be +1, Holding the 1900s +2), it could be holding every city surrounded by a particular color (all red circles are +5, all yellow are +4 or whatever-not worried about the numbers here just the ideas) Or it could be holding a set of 5 rings if the layout heads in that direction (kind of standard gameplay type of continents)

Could work. You would have to develop a way to make impassables though. Perhaps use the black rings as impassables (or somesuch) and spread them out in some way. Also, you might have to be careful about making the map too symmetrical as that seems a particularly unpopular characteristic.

And I would think you'd have to have some way of making the map visually appealing. If you could do that I think it might actually be quite cool.
