thanks for the suggestions guys, I've got my new map thread started.

So, with Oasis finishing up, I'm looking for a new map to make.
I would like that map to be a fantasy map (imaginary location, not based on real geography) similar to Oasis, in that the map is designed around some kind of environment, be it desert, grassland, arctic, mountains, islands, snow, forests, etc, and have that environment have some effect on how the games work.
Oasis is based on the desert theme.
If you guys could think up a good new idea, that would be awesome! because I am really bad at thinking up new ideas

I'm leaning towards trying something with mountains/ice/cold/snow. I've never tried making an image like that, so it would be a fun challenge and could be an interesting map at the same time.
Possibly using the cold as a -1, sort of like on AoR Magic. maybe with warm places (buildings, etc) to keep you safe. Like how the oases protect you on Oasis, maybe houses or fires could protect you from the cold on this new map.
Only problem is, I haven't thought of a good story or objective to go with it, which is where I need you guys. Anything you think of, please post. I'll take all the ideas I can get, maybe I will find something that will work. Maybe that idea would be a good map to equal or even surpass Oasis.

This is a very open-ended discussion. whatever you think might make a good map, post it, as long as it fits the idea of using the terrain to effect how the gameplay is set up.

EDIT: oh, and I'd like to think that my graphics skills have improved some since starting Oasis. Something with more challenging graphics might be possible.

I'd prefer it if you posted any idea you might have in this thread. so then its open for discussion and others can provide input also.
Plus, live chat won't work for me right now, my computer seems to be disagreeing with it.

Oh ok, I was thinking of a "Seasons" map, with all the seasons (i.e Summer, Spring, Autumn and Winter). Sorta like 4 Kingdoms, have 1 Kingdom Summer, then Spring, Etc. With each Kingdom having its own theme of Summer, Spring, Etc. , also each kindom can have 2 conts. Northern and Southern or just 1.

Theirs more to be thought about but thats the main idea, i'll draw up a draft if you want me too.

Haha, I completely forgot about this idea when you asked.

Maybe a map called Mountain-Pass. No continents, bottle-necks galore. Eh?

What if you did a map where you have two "groups" going against each other. For instance, something like Kap's Battleground, if he doesn't end up carrying that to fruition, except only have two armies go against each other and drop the conquest gameplay. Or you could do some sort of naval battle where you arrange a fleet of ships and connect them via boarding planks, bombarding cannons, etc. You could make them pirate fleets, but that may be too similar to Ink's Pirates v. Ninjas v. Everything else.

Whatever setting it ends up being, the gameplay would be classic - random drops in all continents, scramble for small bonuses, etc. The setting could add small twists to it - bombardment routes, autodeploys, etc.

I know this isn't based around an environment, but I figured it was worth posting anyway.

I like this idea. Should consider it.

I'm interested in the seasons theme. It might be a bit strange to make into a map, though. I'd prefer to make a landscape that might actually be realistic, instead of one that has awkward transitions between different seasons.

The more I think about it, the more I am interested in making a purely winter map.
Each player could start in a few random houses on the map. More than one house, randomly assigned each time.

There could be a goal to capture some location, like a food storage place or something.
Or just do traditional gameplay. Player start on houses, everything else is neutral.
The farther from home you go, the bigger the bonuses are that you have access to. Lots of simple 1-territory bonuses scattered all around.

Win by eliminating all your opponents.

Just an idea, but I like it.

actually, i like your snowy mountain kind of idea... maybe a ski resort?

lodges give you bonuses, on the mountain you can only attack down and sideways (similar to circus maximus) and you can only attack "up" skilifts could have multiple hills slopes being worth various bonsuses; the bunny hill maybe 1 or two, the green dot a couple more, the blue square, a couple more, and the black diamond worth the most. barriers oculd be rocky outcroppings, lines of trees, icy patches, etc; things you wouldn't want to ski across

the way i envision it is kind of a combo of circus maximus and king of the hill with a little bit of traditional style play, but feel free to fiddle with th idea

wca - enjoying your work on Oasis. Looking forward to playing that.
If you fancy a graphic challenge and can stretch your definition of terrain ... take a look at [http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=242&t=45286]an old map idea of mine[/url]. I'd love to see someone with real mapmaking skills run with that ...

perhaps a mountain side type map, abandon ski resorts things like that on it, or something more like Everest, different things to traverse to get to the top/ battle for the mountain kinda thing

*edit*
the more i think on it them ore Everest sound like it'd make an awesome map, know its not what you're after wca, but it'd be cool for someone to make

Looks to be a bit too confusing for me
Nice graphics, though.

you could take my settlers of CC idea. It is based off a game called settlers of catan in which you build cities and roads in order to gather resources. it's hard to explain, but i'm sure we could work out the gameplay.

I am currently exploring this idea with sfhbballnut through IM.
I'm liking it more and more.

A small village in the mountains is where all the players are. They are surrounded by lots of snow, and then mountains to block any further travel. Scattered through the snow are various buldings/bonuses/treasures that you can find.
Small bonuses are close to the villages. the farther you travel from the villages, the bigger the bonuses are.
Lots of strategies in this one. You can spread outwards, taking more and more bonuses, or you can stay close to the village and fight your opponents there.

You just have to eliminate all of your opponents to win. So it would not have any objectives.

What do you guys think of that?
It's my favorite idea so far.

Just an update guys.
I am creating a new map now.
As soon as I can figure out how to do the graphics and get a decent image, I'll be posting it.

It is similar to what I wrote in these posts:

Thanks for trying to give me some ideas.... sorry I didn't use them.
Expect to see this map sometime in the next few months.

If anyone could point me to a mountain drawing tutorial that I could modify to do realistic snow/rock covered mountains for my map, that would be awesome.
I've seen Mibi's tutorial, just wondering if there are any other good ones out there.

I'm a bit short on time these days. And browsing google hasn't given me any good results.

thanks in advance, if you've got any good ideas.

I'd like to see a speed freestyle friendly map. Most of the maps are either too large- it lags, to vertical- where you can only see half of it. or too small that it's not playable with 8 players.

Something along the lines of a Classic map with no gimmicks, small bonuses and such

I think my idea would be ok for speed freestyle, just not for any of the reasons you listed.
Large map, bonuses scattered around like on Oasis, but in reverse. start in the middle and spread outwards.
It gets interesting after a round or two. The biggest bonuses are the ones that are farthest away. So you would have to think really fast, choose risking your armies for a big bonus or weakening someone else.

I've done some starting work on the graphics, and I think its gonna work out.
I'm not going to do the mountains, though. I'm just going to have the territories go to the edge of the map. Maybe a few trees or rivers to block things up, though.
It leaves room for more territories that way.
Expect some kind of graphics preview sometime in the next few weeks.
