Postby vampir2124 on Tue Jun 17, 2008 9:50 am

Why on earth hasnt that been done yet???!!!

its a classic bit of graphics work. i dont have the knowledge to put it into place, but it would be great.

bonuses for each line / above ground stations.

would be great.

trademark issues were the biggest thing reading the old thread. But both copyright and trademark issues would be easy to get around if someone simply put their mind to it.

No they wouldn't. Emails were sent to Transport for London (the copyright owners) and they refused to give permission for the map to be made, partly due to the fact they have a commercial interest in a 'Going Underground' board-game.
A map was made, but it had to look significantly different, and consequently looked nothing like the London Underground map as we know it.

So how would that make it hard to get around these issues? 1. don't use the trademark. 2. do your own artwork. 3. Don't use the phrase "underground" at all. I think that is easy. I guess it is perspective?

Well here is the old thread I started. I took over after fluffybunnykins had stopped due to copyright issues. viewtopic.php?f=63&t=39993&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=london+underground

I adjusted the colors, the stations were moved to allow the 88's to fit. The logo was changed and the tile could be changed.
But the original owner still did not allow us to use it.

I think it is different enough. Sure it is the same map in theme and gameplay, but the graphics are different enough I think.
I guess this could be a question to Lack. How different does a maps graphics need to be to NOT be copying?

I think that the map work is ok but the name is an issue as well. Need to remove the reference to the "underground" I think. Tube or whatever you wanna call it.

I agree. I can easily fix the name. London Rail Way / London Metro Rail / London Transport / ...

But the original author said that my map was still too similar. That is the problem not the name.

Like I said , we need to get Andy and the C.A.s here to tell us exactly what constitutes copying and what is not copying. If it is determined that this is not copying. i can get it done really quick.

Well, a better job could be done on making it original. Create your own legend for example. Just one more step basically from where you are on that one.

The legend is original. Fluffy made that himself. The original author thinks the WM version looks to close to this. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/Standard-Tube-map.gif

doh that's right. I confused myself on that one.

useful link: http://www.ursasoft.com/maps/London/london-post-1933.htm

EDITED to add that you should just e-mail that link and ask him to compare yourmap to the 1933 map which I'm sure is not "his copyright" any longer. I don't know British copyright laws, but in the US a 1933 map would be public domain.

the image itself is what is in question. The early maps of the tube - which were made long enough ago that they are now in the public domain - showed distances between stations to scale. The simplified schematic tube maps that we have come to know and love were a product of Harry Beck, who figured out that travelers didn't care the distances, they just wanted a simple way to see each station relative to the others.

The map above that Widowmakers has posted uses Beck's layout, which is subject to copyright. I've proposed in the past that if somebody really wants to make this map they should go back to the pre-Beck maps, though I recognize that it wouldn't be the same.

Does it? I mean I changes the colors and layout of the map. The lines are different directions as well. I guess my question is, How much must am image change before it is not copying?

See, I think by pushing the copyright claim that guy is pushing his luck. But as I said, I know jack about British copyright law and I do know that British laws in other areas (liable) are crazy tough.

I don't think you need to say that each line is a continent. I think that is self evident enough.

I think this map is a good candidate for shared territories. Black/green stations for example where the black and green lines meet. At the same time I think, damned those continents are hard to hold.

oh, nevermind I see that where two lines meet you created two stations. hmmm.

Maybe arrows on the circle line?

I can tell you from personal experience of trying to create an advertising campaign based around an adaptation of the style of the tube map that you will not be able to do this map. Anything that even vaguely looks like the tube map or uses the station names (or adaptations thereof) will not be allowed by the copyright holders. They are extremely strict about it.
