CHESS BY KEMMLER - 1V1 DUEL OF WITS - NEED HELP WITH RULES!

Postby Kemmler on Thu May 29, 2008 3:32 am

This map was a random idea I thought up of during the night. Turning on my laptop and creating the basic board in GIMP I got this:

Half an hour later and some nice effects, I have Version 1:

If I say so myself, it looks pretty cool. I could fall asleep looking at those dreamy colours and numbers...

The boards basically set, I just need the special rules setup. The rules I created are crap, I need someone clever to think up of some simple rules (that'd fit in the legend) and make this fun.

Remember, it's a 1v1 dule of wits.

Thanks for reading, hope it interests you!

Kemm

PS Someone else has probably started work on something to do with chess. This is separate and is not or will not be anything to do with the other chess board. If this has to remain the second project, it's called 'Dream Chess'.

as tom noted, very blurry. Also, i love the look, but currently 1v1 maps arent aloud (i wish they were!) but maybe if you added in some extra territories, moved the pieces around a bit, and add some cool things, then it would work. Heres some ideas for more territories:

1) Take off some of the pieces and put them off to the side of the game board, and those could be the "captured" game pieces
2) Add in another chess board
3) Do 1), and then maybe add in a clock territory? cause i know in some chess tournaments they have clocks

I think the easiest thing to do would be to rearrange the pieces, into an actual in-game format. Use two of the classic openings; consider googling:

Sicilian Defense
London System
Stonewall Attack

Or look through whichever of these catches your eye:

If you put the pieces in formation, the attack rules can be exactly what they are in chess. Another thought: if the only playable territories were the pieces, and the unoccupied squares were just empty, you could differentiate between pieces' abilities further, by (for example) positioning the queen where she can attack faraway pieces that the king couldn't, etc. This would be a map with a TON of functional one-way attacks :D

I think that Brian largely nails it. I think this is a map with potential. You might want to try and use one of the starting positions that allows each player to have a variety of pieces in play as well as some in position for defensive reasons.

As for 1 on 1, you could semi-force it in many ways. You could do an 8 starting position thing ala feudal or set it up so that you have to strategize for offense and defense on each side. Or set it up differently. Add two rows on each side and have 4 sets of pieces facing the center. etc... etc...

for along the lines of the starting position thing.... maybe have each pawn a starting point? and maybe have an objection of "Hold all the royalty" aka being hold the queen and king of both colors, which the kings could have like... (throwing out a number here) 30 neutral?

also, make the pieces do only moves they are able to do in real chess cuz like the knight can only attack in a "L" shape, not 2 away...
the pieces are really blurry as people have said, and is that light supposed to be a reflection of a light overhead? its kinda weird...

YES!!! (except not 30 neutral... maybe 15-20?)

This is the point... blurry and dreamy.

I had already considered what you said but didn't know how to carry it out. I need someone else to brainstrom the rules exactly!

Rules:

-Empty spaces are not territories; only pieces are.
-Rooks can attack pieces that are directly adjacent forward, backward, left or right, as well as pieces separated by only empty spaces in those directions (however, a rook cannot attack a piece if there is another in the way).
-Bishops can attack diagonally, with the same limitations as rooks.
-Queens can attack eight ways, with the same limitations as rooks.
-Kings can attack eight ways, but can only attack adjacent pieces.
Pawns can attack one space diagonally forward ONLY.

Satisfied?

how about instead of the empty spaces not being territories, simply limit what they can do. What if all space and pieces can bombard 1 space in each direction. But only pieces can do anything else, such as attack.
