pretty sensitive subject and a very insensitive post... wow... maybe you should study up on what it is you are about to embark upon. yeah, i see you are from the UK, so i excuse your ignorance. but there are alot of families still affected by the vietnam war and the ordeals the soldiers that were there still undergo. this is a very poorly worded post and extremely insensitive. "stupid things", wow...-0

well, my family is from vietnam, and its not a big deal, but owen is right, you should probably word your posts more carefully next time.

furthermore, this should be moved to foundry discussion or map ideas.

There is already a beautiful Indo-China Map which is the region in question here,
but it sounds like you have a lot of homework to do before you even start.

Remember,Google is your friend.

owenshooter i didnt mean it like that
i ment something like any things thati should know that i dont because i am so stupid.
- not trying to be dis-respectful.

there have been other maps going around the forum such as the WWII series and the Falklands War both of those wars are still being rememered today and still have an impct today, as well as the vietnam war.

i understand that i should "word it more carefully" so next time i will

i have Googled it but all i can find it websites that glorify the war, and it is very hard to find a map of that region from that era.

sorry for any dis-respect.

Also don't forget that a lot of "news" about the vietnam war was heavily doctored by both sides...

So truly understanding what happened there will be a big ask.

yeh thatwas what i was trying to say before, thats why i was asking other people who may have lived through the war - because i didnt - im only 14, so im just appealing for information form other users.

All i know about the war is that the USA was trying to stop the spread of comunism.

Was the USA on Southern Vietnam's side?
And the USSR on the North Vietnam's side?

this reminds me of the time a 30 year old friend of mine went to see
Cold Mountain, and asked me what war it took place in. she had never
heard of or been taught about the Civil War in her northern california
school district... just wow... good luck!! hope you learn something...-0

p.s.-again, i realize you live in england, and it probably isn't taught in
your school, but you really should have done some decent research before
making that first post... it isn't like you had to go to the library, like in my
day. you have all the worlds knowledge at your fingertips with a few simple
web searches...

Owen - lay off the guy for Chrissakes... he's said he wants to learn... and you're right the Vietnamese war isn't taught in the UK... so he is in a position of complete ignorance... now give him a change to learn before you jump down his throat.

In very very very basic laymans turns...

The USA were on Southern Vietnam's side.
The USSR were on the North Vietnam's side.

thanks yeti_c

acctually im not sure but i think the vietnam war is taught in Brittish school, but very rarely. in GCSE History we have about 3 or 4 topics that our school can choose from.
Theyre like-
Nazi Germany 1933-1945 - thats what im doing
Russia - something like 1915-something - their revolution or something about the tzar
The cold war - which i think covers the vietnam war a little bit
and im not sure about this one, but there might be a choice of the veitnam war there - but as i said - im not sure about that one.

^^we only get taught one of these though^^

i think

No - that wouldn't be a good idea...

You could - and probably should - use the North and South Vietnamese flags...

That's what the MASH units want you to believe. A lot of news simply died on the battfield without any medical attention whatsoever. Towards the end of the war any news that wasn't killed outright was probably too stoned to be understood.

But seriously, you need to do some research into the causes of the war and the factors that cause the war to continue. Remember this whole mess actually started with France.

what i love, is how he escalated a police action to a war. the vietnam conflict is now the vietnam war... sweet!!!-0

p.s.-1.5 million soldiers and an estimated 2 million civilians lost their lives, but hey, a 14 year old kid from britain can't be expected to do any research before slapping a russian flag on the north and a US flag on the south...

It wasn't taught in my school... and it looks like this guy is being taught WWII - which also wasn't taught in my school... That's why I binned History and did Geography.

However - I have been to Vietnam - and you pick up a fair amount of history when you're there.

He's not the only one. In fact the only ones who keep trying to downplay the use of the term "war" are the lawyers. Even the VFW accepts members from the Vietnam Conflict. (And they are the Veterans of Foreign Wars, not the Veterans of Foreign Wars and also Police Actions.)
