Conquer Club

Hi everyone. This is my first time making a map, so I please forgive any mistakes I will almost certainly make.

For those who don't know, the Premier League (English professional football/soccer league) just kicked off its 20th season. My idea was to create a map that had one territory for each of the 45 teams that have played in the Premier League over the course of the last 20 seasons. The map (rough draft pictured below) is a modified map of England and Wales.

I'm posting in here to see if you guys think this is an idea worth going forward with and I will happily take any suggestions you guys have based on my rough draft.

I don't know. Aside from the fact that it's English football clubs I can't say this would be much different than the regular England map that's already out there.

I considered that when I realized my idea and the England map were going to have a similar number of territories (39 to 45 I believe). I've tried to make it unique, beyond just the theme, by eliminating sections of England from play which didn't have any teams to make gameplay different. The heavily condensced areas around London and Manchester will also change gameplay hopefully.

I'm open to other suggestions to make my idea more different from the existing England map.

Yeah I'm not sure what you could do to make it different enough. Also I'm not sure how the usage of the club names would fly here as they may be trademarked or copyrighted.

Copyright shouldn't be an issue because pretty much all of the names used are cities or areas, which can't be trademarked (just like using a territory called "Paris").

Is there any way you can spice up the game play? What about holding other rivals tert gives you a negative bonus things like that. As is it is just another England map. Good luck.

Untrue. There are names like Manchester United, Queens park Rangers etc. on the map. Those are likely copyrighted.

Okay, I will conceed that some of the names might be problematic, but easily changed. The names on this map fall into three categories:

1. Place names, such as Swindon, Newcastle, etc. These do not fall foul of any rules or regulations as they are place names and free to use (such as 'Paris' or 'London')

2. Partial team names, such as Arsenal, Man City, etc.. My initial research seems to indicate these would be fine, though I could be wrong and might need more research. For example, Man City have trademarks on Manchester City and Manchester City Football Club (FC), but not necessarily just Man City, which is more of a colloquial term for them. However, they are not place names and hint at the brands themselves.

3. Full team names, such as Manchester United, Queens Park Rangers, etc. On my initial draft, these names will fall foul of trademark issues, however this can be resolved by changing them to Man U (or Man United even) and just Queens Park.


Also, in this case we are dealing with trademarks and not copyrights, which is a whole different issue. Trademarks are meant to protect well known brands from other companies using their name for a profit in a way that will confuse their customers and/or result in the degredation of their brand name and value. I don't think a CC map, while arguably for profit, will confuse or cause the degredation of a football team's name.

I, not being a lawyer, may be out of my depth here, so I'm not sure if anyone can help clarify the laws, but this is my knowledge of them.

Yeah, a lot of teams have derbies with more than one club.

As ironsij said, most teams have multiple rivals. I picked out one rivalry from each bonus area (apart from London which I chose two). I figured this would change the gameplay in it makes it harder to take any bonus region and it makes it more damaging if someone breaks you (for example, if you hold the north-east and someone attacks Middlesbrough, you lose the +2 for holding the region and also have a -1 for having rivals (Sunderland and Newcastle) without holding the region.

I'm not sure whether the -1 for rivalries should go away if you have whole region or not (it currently does).
