Laundry List of Ideas

I notice that we have a map of Tamriel from Elder Scrolls on here. That immediately made me think of other video games that could be easily converted into Risk scenarios. For example...
World of Warcraft and Guild Wars both have in-game maps that could be easily converted into Risk maps. There are potential copyright issues, but I'm certain we could get those cleared with an email to Blizzard and ArenaNet (respectively). The maps are already freely available online, and sticking a logo for the game/company on it would provide them with free advertising. I'm pretty sure the only way copyright would prove to be a hurdle is if they just didn't get back to us at all.
Middle-Earth is probably an idea that's been had before, and given how stingy the Tolkien Estate tends to be over Tolkien's intellectual property, this one might see more copyright issues. Same goes for Narnia. But it's probably worth sending a letter their way.
Also, what about Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun, and other pen and paper based mapped worlds? Again, worth a shot, and they're less likely to think it an affront to the respectability of the works in question, like with the Tolkien and Lewis Estates.
Going into history, I notice we've got plenty of Ancient Egypt and Greece-based maps, things for the Celts and the native nations of America which I was pleasantly surprised by, and a few modeled on Ancient Rome, but the Roman ones don't really satisfy me and there's nothing at all for India and China BC that I can tell. Particularly, there's no map based off of the Three Kingdoms period of China, and that needs to happen. I wonder if you could work the other three classics of Chinese literature into their own maps?
Also, although the theme of the middle ages has been done a lot and done pretty well, actual maps based on real events seem kind of slim. Maybe I've missed some, but I don't really see any past the Third Crusade, which is a pretty complicated example. How about something about the Hundred Years War, the War of the Roses, Charlemagne, or King Arthur? The historical authenticity of that last one is debatable, but you get the point.
We have everything from the Caribbean to the Cold War pretty much covered, I think. What about maps based off of Final Fantasy? Again, copyright issues, but if the free advertising bit works, there's a ton of potential maps there, as well as some potentially interesting mechanics. I'm pretty sure just about every Final Fantasy has some kind of national conflict in it, except for the first, which still had plenty of diverse nations even if they never actually went to war with one another.
What about Star Trek or Star Wars? Neither of them should be too attached to maps of their respective galaxies. In terms of general themes without specific pre-existing settings attached, what about something themed around being the Dark Lord of a fantasy kingdom?
'Kay. Think I'm done. Question, though: Is it possible to make jumbo-size maps with a very large number of players? For the Three Kingdoms map in particular, the actual Three Kingdoms era began with over a dozen major warlords, and it'd be cool to be able to make a map big enough to simulate that without players starting with 2-3 territories.

Give the guy a break he's new.
I would be interested to see a WWF map though. Instead of "bombardment" we can have "territory 'Hulk Hogan' pile drives territory 'The Undertaker'"

A few of these sound pretty good to me. Vikings in particular.

I would advise you to not waste time on copyrighted material. CC is a business that makes money from the maps it has. Other businesses aren't very likely to let CC make money of their intellectual property without any kind of compensation.
Middle earth and all Tolkien-related stuff you can forget right off the bat. Those have been suggested a zillion times, Tolkien estate will never grant a permission for free to use their material... people have approached them in the past, no luck there. Same is probably true with Narnia, WoW, etc.
The historical ideas have much more potential. If you pick a historical theme, I'd advise you to think of a gameplay that is both fun to play and represents your the theme well - the gameplay & theme need to support each other.

Why a thread, when we have a whole forum for ideas?

This sentence is a treasure trove of good ideas.

There's a Three Kingdoms of Korea map in FF currently.

because a lot of us are not going to make a whole new thread for every good idea we have. I have about 20 more that have been cooking for years. that was just a short 10 sec list last night.

Well, the lot of you can post all your ideas in one thread...
Either way, posting ideas generally does little around here. With the exception of those rareish situations when a capable mapmaker is flat out of ideas for his/her next map and happens to stumble by your idea thread... but generally, the mapmakers who are capable of just taking an idea and running it through, already are busy with their own projects...
I'm just saying. By no means do I want to discourage you from posting good ideas... it's just a bit shame that so few of those ideas ever get done.

The XML for map creation doesn't look too overwhelming, just time-consuming. Not really sure about graphic design, though, particularly given that I don't own photoshop and it's crazy expensive to buy.

Someone please sticky.
I am probably one of the top ten most active players in cc in the last 3 years. I can keep this updated.
Post your laundry list of ideas. If they turn out to be non unique, Ill cross them out and provide a link.
A lot of very talented Mapmakers here just need the perfect Idea. Lets help them out.

AoN- vikings, pirates of south Louisiana, an oil reserve map, a mariannas trench map, another mountain map like K2 or Everest, a streetfight map, A DFW airport map, a battle of okinawa map, a rape of nanking map, a lewis and clark map, a WWF map

(editors note.. lot of copyright stuff here, tread carefully, possible but just have to make sure you are correct, the three kingdoms china is incredible idea, but very broad, nt copyrighted at all, but needs narrowing to battles or very general play.)

Alright, does anyone know where I can get a good map of the Three Kingdoms era, preferably in multiple different years throughout? Even if it's copyrighted, it'll give me a good idea of what my final map should look like.

I notice there are Tamriel and Discworld maps. Did someone get the copyright for these, or is it allowed to use someone else's names so long as we don't use any of their actual graphics in our map?

I see.
How important is it for a map to have odd gameplay mechanics? Is it possible to just have a map that plays like a normal Risk game? I want to start off my mapmaking with the Three Kingdoms idea, but I can't think of anything that fits the theme better than just a normal game of Risk.
EDIT: Wait! Is it possible to give people extra spoils based on holding a certain region?

No, that's not possible.
You don't have to create "odd gameplay mechanics". You just need a gameplay that fits the theme of the map.

I have a few rough ideas for maps swimming around my head. I thought I'd throw them on here and see if anyone gets inspired to run with them.
-Manhattan - Yeah I know there's an NYC map but it seems like a map just focusing on Manhattan Island could be interesting as well.
-Tourist Trap - Originally thought of it for Iowa. Basically laid out similar to Route 66. Highways connecting cities. But there would be a handful of roadside attractions (e.g. World's Biggest _________, or whatever). Whoever holds all of the tourist traps for a single turn wins.
-Rivers - While rail has been done a few times for maps, I thought about rivers as a possibility. Like rivers in the Central USA or something (Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, etc). Set up the cities along them as the territories and give bonuses for holding whole river segments or something. There could be a few non-riverine routes to allow for more connectivity (canals, roadways, etc).
-Rock Concert - Seems like sports have become a favorite theme to do lately but what about an arena during a rock concert? Playing the Cricket map gave me the idea. Have regions like the main stage, back stage, VIP seats, General Admission, and what not. Or even expand upon it and do "Music Festival" with multiple stages and such.
That's all I have for now. I've got way more ideas than I have time to flesh them all out so I hope someone takes one of these and runs with it.
