Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is the northernmost city in North America with a metropolitan population over one million. The highways, Light Rail Transit (LRT), and neighbourhoods in the city are perfectly laid-out for a Conquer Club map.

Edmonton has six wards (CC "continents"), each of which is divided into many smaller neighbourhoods. Obviously, many of the neighbourhoods will have to be combined to make the map manageable. The City Centre Airport (just north of downtown) and the international airport (south of the city) would make great bombardment launch points. Also, there could be bonuses associated with possessing stations along the LRT or highways.

I can't find a decent map in an image format, but I found this one in PDF from the city's website.

City of Edmonton Wards and Standard Neighbourhoods Map
Warning: It's somewhat large at 1.4 MB.

What do you think? Could this make a good CC map?

I didn't get any replies to my earlier post, but I made a preliminary map anyway. Maybe this will get people's attention (hell, even a "this idea sucks" would be better than silence).

Here's the large version of the map (798x800):

Hmm... I have to admit, I wasn't too excited when I saw the thread title, but the LRT and Expressway routes are really neat. Are there boat routes along the river there in Canada? Cuz that might be neat to do instead of the bridges...

I like this idea, like a nyc style map. it could go far.

I dunno... NYC and the whole metro thing has been done over and over again and while I understand just about every city has a metro, I doubt they make for a solid gameplay element on every city map.

The biggest thing that I don't like is the wide openess of the map. Let's see some choke points where I can take an hold. The bonuses look impossible to get.

Hrm... What about if you could cross area boundaries (e.g., Downtown to Southgate, West Edmonton to St Albert, etc.) only via the LRT, expressways, and bridges?

Unfortunately, no. There is a riverboat, but that has only one port and isn't used for transportation (only parties and the like). Most places in the river are too shallow to allow for deep-keeled ferries.

Edit:
I just had an idea that might make gameplay more interesting. Instead of letting the airport attack neighbours and bombard anyone, maybe the airport could bombard anyone but attack no one. Since no bonus is associated with the airport, then the airport would be used to view the entire map (on Fog-Of-War games), have the potential to break up a super-strong opponent who has blockaded himself, and could still be attacked by neighbours.

If you can cross region boundaries only via the LRT, expressway, and bridges, then I propose the following modifications to the bonus structure:
  • St Albert: 1
  • Downtown: 3
  • Clareview: 3
  • Mill Woods: 4
  • Southgate: 5
  • West Edmonton: 5

In a warfare situation, the riverboat might be used to bombard points along the river - that would make the riverboat port a key territory, and add a feature not usually present on city maps.

Good point. I'm wondering how I'd fit that in, though. The port is downtown, and that area of the map is already pretty crowded. I could always put the port in the northeast or southwest, but that would make the map inaccurate. Everything on that map is accurate to within two pixels. 8-[ I'm kind of a perfectionist.

On another note, how do I know if this will ever be ready for The Drafting Room? Is this a good enough idea to even warrant a mention in that sub-forum?

The port could accurately be downtown but used by armed forces to send boats up and down the river to bombard riverside points uptown :D

Yeah, I could probably sneak a nautical-themed icon into Bonnie Doon (where the dock is). It would basically have the same function as the airport, except it can bombard only territories along the river, and it's actually part of another territory (as opposed to being its own).
