Battle of the Nations

I have the idea of creating a map of the "Battle of the Nations" or alternatively also called "Battle of Leipzig" or "Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig" in 1813, where Napoleon was beaten in the biggest battle (about 600.000 soldiers) until the 20th century.

I don't have a real concept so far, but at least roughly in mind, how it should work. I am collecting detailed information to the battle and some maps right now to work out a concept based on that.

I am not able to design a map right now, so I hope there is at least one designer who is interested in helping me with the project. After having a look at the XML-files of other projects, I am sure that I can do that.

Hm. Do you have any plans for the gameplay?

I am thinking of a mixture of Austerlitz and Waterloo. Artillery was definitely important in the battle, but since there were many locations where different actions of the battle took place, they can't be that strong like on the Waterloo map. The battling front has to be basically concentrical and I am thinking about making that points strong, that decided the real battle. I didn't think further so far, but if anybody has a real good idea for gameplay, I would consider them.

Sounds interesting. How about you make a draft of the gameplay, you know, just territory names and connections- it doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something that shows the basic layout.

Looking at the map. I think something closer to Austerlitz than Waterloo would work here. One could still give different types of troops unique attributes, but there is too much space within N's lines of communication to fill the map up like Waterloo.

Wow, nice, which software did you use to create that? I will create my own concept within the next days. Is there any good freeware to draft a concept? Otherwise I try it with paint.Net... And is there any chance to use the map without all the troops? Thank you.

i didnt do it, i just googled it. the map is copyrighted, sorry. but you can take the info and create your own. Gimp is a free sofware, if that's what you want. Good luck with this, I am a big N fan!

If you need help with paint.net just let me know, I do all my maps with it.

Heh, thanks. But paint.net isn't that bad once you get to know it - sure it's a simpler software than GIMP but the upside is that it runs a lot smoother, at least on my computer. Some things may be a bit harder to do than on gimp or PS but so far I haven't come across anything that would be impossible... ;)

I guess I'm just used to simple gfx software... I remember when the best available program for home users was Deluxe Paint - you had a whoppin' 256 colours, no layers, no alpha, the only "effects" were a few distortions and a primitive smudge tool... still, people managed to create some awesome shit with it.

Ah, the 90's.

is that the same Blucher from waterloo?
I'd love to see this map go ahead but tbh i'd prefer a similar style to Waterloo.
The wikipedia article has good diagrams, but how would you represent the change in formation on the map? and plz make the poles awesome and overpowered as they are in real life.

Sorry guys, I will definitely create this project, but I am drowning with my games and real life right now. I started already with drafting, but I couldn't finish it so far...
