I was thinking, how about a map based on George Orwell's 1984, that said i'm not sure what you'd do for territories, though you could probably have one region of the ministries, and one for the proles etc. etc., but it might collide with copyright issues, but i reckon it could be done as to avoid copyright problems, thoughts?

Yeah, most likely there would be copyright issues.

Check the date that the book was released. I believe that it may now be "Free Domain". 8-)

I could be wrong, but I think that it s Free Domain after 70 years. So if 1948 is correct, you would have 8 more years to go. You need to check the numbers.

You can take the Big Brother concept and adjust the names, copyright or not. The idea of Big Brother isn't new, but 1984 is most famous for espousing it in such a vivid way. Any lawyers who might claim a name-changed version is a copy wouldn't have ground to stand on.

Sort of what I was thinking,

Written in 1948, and published in 1949 i think.
Many things have been derived from 1948, borrowing concepts, names etc., so I am guessing it is not a problem, though we seem to have mixed opionons. Also there's not an awful in 1984 that is unique.

The idea of Big Brother isn't new, but it did originate in Orwell's book. And the 70 year countdown on copyright doesn't start until the author's death, in this case, in 1950 => 2020.

It would fall under Public Domain 70 years after the authors death. So whenever George Orwell dies then add 70 years from that date.

You could base it on the 3 super-continents (or was it super-countries?) he imagined. But I'm not sure how that would really differ from a world map :?
