A mars map would be sweet... somebody make a planets map pack!!1!

In all serious though, Mars would be pretty cool. But the trouble with planet/moon map packs is that they're tough to pull off. Natty and Isaiah have done nicely with Lunar War though. So its possible, but needs some thought.

Somebody, eh? ;)

In all seriousness, I have considered the possibility of a mars map as a sequel to Lunar War... we have been considering at least some kind of sequel to that map, if it proves to be popular. It could be a mars map or it could be something else... we'll see.

But that will have to wait, at least until Lunar war is finished.

About a year ago, Gimil and Oaktown were working on a Mars map.

I was a big fan of the sci-fi theme they had going.

Hmmm I was just thinking a War of the Worlds map would be pretty awesome. Something along the lines of a map of Mars and inset of England a la New World style.

Ian Eddington wrote a comic book set in the post-Martian invasion where the Brits repelled the aliens, stole the technology and took the war to Mars... which ended up unfolding much like WWI... but on Mars.

I browsed that thread a bit, and it seems to me the biggest problems of that map were thematic inconsistency and the gameplay that was exactly the same as on classic map...

Here's a vision: the year 2160, 100 years after the Lunar war... man has begun colonizing mars. 8 countries (I wonder which ones) are each trying to start their own colony on mars. But resources are scarce, and history repeats itself... they end up fighting for land, mining rights, terraforming resources... Another planetary war. A war that would be known as... Martian War. ;)

To be honest, I Gimil and Oaktown wanted that gameplay to be exactly the same as the classic I think. :D

You know, I'm actually digging the old Mars map... why'd it get stopped? Someone should revive it...

Well correct me if I'm wrong... but ever since the new classic map was released, and shapes & arts were taken down, I've heard it said that lackattack doesn't want any more alternative classic maps, ie. maps with classic gameplay & different graphics... ie. all new maps should be unique in gameplay...

Well, the situation probably was different back then when the map was being made... But I actually agree with mibi on what he said in the thread: if you're making a new map, why not make a new gameplay? A subject like mars, there would be material for so much more.

Oaktown and Gimil I think were burning out, but I'm sure they'd know better why it was stopped. In any case, I really like the iconography and theme they had going, and would like to see a Sci-Fi Mars map someday.

The sci-fi elements were a win, but overall that map was pretty ugly. Gimil and I were sharing PSDs and taking turns working on it, and the results were something that neither of us was entirely happy with; I don't recommend this is as a mapmaking strategy.

And yeah, we wanted to sneak a map through with classic play. At the time there was no site policy on classic gameplay, just a pair of maps that had been produced in less than 48 hours. Plus we thought we were being clever. ;) Making a classic Mars map now wouldn't make sense.

You seriously thought no one was going to notice? :D

(well... to be honest, I didn't notice it myself the first time I looked at the map... but when I started looking at the bonuses, it suddenly hit me - wtf...)
