Confucius says: The worth of an idea depends on the execution.

There has been a few tries at an Israel map but most of them tend to work on Ancient Israel rather than modern. You'd have to illustrate your map yourself or find someone to do it for you.

1. Get a graphics software
2. Learn how to use it
3. Draw the map
4. ???
5. Profit!!!

Yeah, you're best bet would be to get some sort of graphics software, there's a number of free programs out there such as paint.net and GIMP which work reasonably well. Play around with it and take a look at the tutorials posted in the foundry.

You can ask for cartographic assistance. PM porkenbeans for example.

... in other words, you have an idea, but god forbid you have to do any work for it?

Chill out Natty. This forum is for suggestions as well as ideas with draft maps. Perhaps after enough clamoring for an Israel (ancient or modern) map we'll finally get one... it worked for Japan ;)

No, I get that. It's just, these kind of threads rarely go anywhere. I see a clear pattern in them, they go something like this:

- I'd like to see a map of XX.
- Well, you could try making one.
- I don't know how.
- You just need to draw it. Get a graphics software.
- I don't wanna.
- Well you can get someone to do the graphics for you if you ask around.
- Meh, too much trouble.

... so what was the point again? It's this generation who's used to everything being available in the blink of an eye. With the fast food chains, interent providing all kinds of information and entertainment with a click of a mouse, they come into the Foundry like they've just entered a McDonald's and say "a map of israel to go, with large fries and a cola, please".

I realize I'm probably ranting for nothing, I'd just love to see a bit more thought put into these threads. Something more than "I want a map of (insert country/city/whatever)", like why do you think it would be a good map, why would anyone go through all the trouble making just a single map requires... Some kind of idea about the gameplay, or an unique theme, or whatever, but please give us SOMETHING besides just "someone should make a map of XX".

I'll get off the soapbox now.

Well, this is a forum for suggestions. It was intended for people with an idea who didn't have the means to make it happen, I don't see how deriding a person's suggestion does anything but promote an, dare I say, "elitist" attitude in the foundry.

Do all these single sentence posts amount to a map in the works... I'd say yes.

Exodus is a good example of a thread without a draft. How many posts have there been for a Scandinavian map? Peru finally has a draft. Chicago was a city map people were dying for it to be made...

These opinions add up and eventually they go towards the support of a map draft and eventually a quenched map. The foundry, especially the melting pot, shouldn't just be for drafts or experienced mapmakers only. It totally derails the concept of an open and public forum, of which the Foundry is.

That's right, don't mind my rants. Sometimes I just get frustrated at the process. And by no means should my comments be interpreted to discourage people from posting map ideas.

But I would still love to see more than 1 or 2 lines of text in these map idea posts.

For example something like this:

"I'd like to see a map of israel being developed. Israel would make an interesting map, because there are lots of geographical features / historical events / current world politicss / fill-in-the-blank that would translate well to CC gameplay. "

If I sound elitistic, I apologize. But I just don't think OP is giving us, the mapmakers, much to work with. Sure, I (for example) could just start making a map of Israel, but I know f*ck all about Israel, and unless I have someone who has a clear idea of how to translate the country of Israel into an interesting map for CC gameplay, I don't think the project would advance much.

Generally, I'd love for new people to come in the foundry and offer their ideas. But is it so wrong to wish the ideas to be a little more than "make a map of country XYZ"?

Anyway, we have derailed this thread enough I think. Forgive me for expressing my opinion with an attempt at witty humour. I guess you can't win them all. If the OP would like to elaborate on his Israel idea, or some other idea, I wish him all the best on it and hope it succeeds.

Well, I think its wrong to expect that ideas in the melting pot be very developed at all. Realistically, a map with more than 1 draft needs to be in gameplay development, these are ideas and new ideas only. But yeah, I hear things in the melting pot are going to be changing sometime in the near future.

But Israel would be a great map, in my opinion. It's been the near center of post WWII western conflict and has a lot of history and things to work with in terms of gameplay. I've been giving it some thought actually since the last post about an Israel map and I dunno if and how I want to pursue it.

Of course I've got the map pack to start and finish, and after that I want to do WWII Atlantic and Pacific Theaters map pack... Then after that, maybe I will pursue the Israel map. Something along the lines of the 7 days war or the Yom Kippur War. Personally, because the current situation in Israel is such a hot topic I would avoid doing a modern map and stick with traditional campaign warfare.

I'm not asking the ideas to be "developed". Sigh... just read my last post again.

Anyway, you're right in that Melting pot surely needs something done with it. We're slowly drifting back to the old problem from the Drafting room era - maps standing still in the first forum and not going anywhere. I hope you are right about things changing. But I don't think this is the place for this discussion.

So, a map of Israel. Yes, I agree a modern war map would not be the best idea. Too much political controversy. I'm not very familiar with the historical wars/battles of Israel, but if executed properly a good map could surely be made from them.

But like I said, I don't know much about Israel, except a few good psytrance artists...

Haha. Natty, you sound like the parents who want to sue Eminem instead simply not listening to him... Kidding aside, as someone who has tried a few times to start a map but who simply doesn't have the time, I understand how hard it is to break into the cartography ranks. Although it might come naturally to some people, graphics can be very very very difficult. Sometimes the effort put into these posts is not apparent, but that does not mean it isn't there. I know how hard you work on your maps, and I respect the hell out of you for doing it, as well as for helping so many others. But I don't think most people get that, and sometimes the best thing is to let them download GIMP and try it for themselves. Anyways, I think any activity by the casual user in the Foundry is a good thing, and we should encourage that.

Well I'm working on The Exodus of Israel from Egypt right now, and I am planning to develop more historical Israel maps as long as this current one gets the support from the community. My plan is to have up to the Divided Kingdom, maybe even the captivity into Babylon. There's at least 5 or 6 maps combined there. So if someone wants to do the present day Israel, then by all means go for it!!
