just an fyi, no one can force the map creator to do anything. It's completely his/her map to create. People in this thread are here to give good constructive criticism and to say what they would LIKE to see added/changed. Only Andy and Lack get the final say in what's crucial to be done or not. So no sense in bickering....Anyway, how's the progress going on this one?? i'd rather not see it die =)

My first reply is as following:

Vujo is a Croatian nationalist/patriot, call it whatever you want. He complains that there is no KRAINA and that this map is a creation of Greater Serbia.
Greater Serbia is used more by Croats/Bosnians to demonize Serbs, rather than something of a fact. Serbs lived in Croatia and got cleansed/expelled, and that's a fact. How they got there is a historical explusion from Ottoman Empire, not from Serbian conquest.
Serbs lost (never gained an inch of non-Serbian inhabittant territory), Croats won. That's a fact. Everything else is a political discussion and I recommend Vujo to go to to Croatian political forums, not here.

So Kraina was annaxed by Croatians, so I put it as part of Croatia (not part of Serbia as Vujo thinks). Kosovo is full of Albanians (with Serbs expelled) so I made it separate from Serbia.

I made Serbia smaller in this map than it is under current 'political' boundaries.
Srpska is a Serbian republic which does not recognize sovereignty of Bosnia, but it is part of Bosnia because it got annaxed under the DAYTON agreement. However, Bosnians and Serbs still acknowlege it's existance (Bosnians are trying all they can to eliminate what remains of it politically).

Issue of Slovenia I cannot change, because it would make this map unplayable, unless VUJO has some better suggestion (except make everything Croatia)???

This is Risk map, not a political map. If VUJO doesn't have any useful comments, he is overcrowding this discussion forum.

For the rest of you, who have given me some thoughtful insights, here are the changes I've made:

-I put the fancy mountains (if you don't like 'em, I'll just keep the old version because you guys just seem split in personal preference, not technicality).
-I changed little flags so they look the same in size.
-I tried to align the bonus numbers as best as I could
-River is now the colour of the ocean
-My name apprears close to the title
-All outside countries are labelled

I've also play tested it, and it seems fine. Does anyone else wanna play test it????

And someone asked me where I am from. I am a Serb from Croatia. Because Croatians burnt my home, I have obvious bias against them, but I tried my best to make this map objective.

Like the mountails alot. The river looks nice in the colourful map, but when it enters romania its a bit hard to see (doesn't really matter though cos its not part of the playing area). Maybe you should join Primorska to Gorenjska and Backa to Srem (so you get rid of countries with only one border). Your flags are a bit out, if u magnify it i think you will find serbia one pixel to narrow, and the flags of Srpska and Slovenia out of place by one pixel. Also why did you change the name from The Balkans to Yugoslavia? I personally prefer The Balkans. Are you going to make your bridges fancy like uve done with your mountains?

I think the map is good enough. Everyone has ideas of their own to put into this map but i think its up to the creator (mighty Serb) to do as he wishes. If you want to make your own map you are free to do so. No offence gavin_sidhu but who cares about one pixel of the flag and also the fancy bridges. As long as the map is playable its all good 8)

I like the mountains, too. There is 2 little errors i could detect: between Bosna - Vrbas, one mountain is over another one in front of it; and one more needed between Sutieska and Neretva.

Also, the country to south of Austria is not labeled, and Croatia and Kosovo names at legend are using wrong colours, I think.

About playability, are Dubrovnik and Southern Dalmatia allowed to attack each other? And maybe Croatia bonus could be really 7 too.

Beyond this, great map, and I loved the new texture. Good job.

No, Kosovo and Croatia. Once he corrects kosovo colour, it will no more be alike to Montenegro. But Croatia colour in the legend is also much darker than in the map.

-changed the bridges to FANCY (it took me half a day to draw a decent bridge)
-connected primorska and gorenjska
-bridged backa and srem
-resized the width of the Serbia flag, and realigned slovenia/srpska flag
-made dotted lines between southern dalmatia and Dubrovnik to show they are adjacent
-Took Maradvin’s comment about the mountains, but I must be blind cuz I didn’t see any problems, but I shifted mountains around in those areas anyways.
-Country south of Austria is NOT labeled because it is also Italy (would be pointless to label Italy twice)
-Changed the colour of the labels of KOSOVO, CROATIA and MONTENEGRO

Try contacting him and ask if he could put the map up for play right now just to test it out and to see what people think :)

you can start doing the xml anytime you want, and in this case, prolly the sooner the better. you just have to understand that your map is still in the works, so any name changes that you may make on the map have to be corrected in the xml as well.

Good job.

The map looks great. About the legend, the flags still dont have same dimensions. And there is something strange. I think its about Croatia and Kosovo names having black borders and the others having white ones.

The next step will probably be difficult, arrange room to all numbers. Some regions, mainly srpska, will probably be crowded.

Here you can download a xml to edit. Europe and Philippines also have 48 countries, so a bit less work

Its off-topic, but no. I used Brazil xml, that have 45 and was saved already at my PC when I started the xml for Philippines. But since he will download one, I suggested pick one with same number of countries

Ok I will start XML tommorrow.

Hmmm when I designed the map I kept in mind that there needs to be room for numbers, so that shouldn't be a problem, though I don't know how big the space needs to be.

What about those gray circles, do they appear with the numbers during play or I have to put them???

Croatia and Kosovo bonus labels are different colour because they are a light colour. If I put a white outline to the text, then it is REALLY hard to read it. That's why they are different from the others. I tried to find a universal colour for all of them, but there isn't one.

Very nice map, like the bridges on the side (eg. Pokuplje to Moslavina).

Sorry about being picky, but it looks as if parts of the river are a different shade to other parts, like the part of the river that is left of the bridge from vrbas to pokuplje looks different from that right of the river. Also sections of the river aalong Podringe look to be darker (near the bridge).

No one helped me with xml. Why are you thinking that?

And serb, if you want numbers background, you need put them. Did you really try to find a colour to both? Well, maybe you then can make the yellow and the gray in the map a little darker... Anyway, with the xml ready we will see the little problems adjusting countries sizes, etc.

I was meaning did he help you with the map... He told Cblake he practically helped make the map...and I didnt think that that sounded very realistic..

Alright, well it looks like this map is coming along!

  • Have you considered revamping the water, and making it feel more like water? Both the sea and the rivers?
  • Also, what about perhaps adding a texture to the areas not apart of play in the map. They again feel flat.
  • Near the legend, the image doesn't seem to quite fit with the map, perhaps due to it being a real image. Perhaps look into rendering it to the style of the map.
  • The font is alright, though I'm afraid the white behind the black lettering makes it a little unclear and hard to read. Perhaps look into just black, or other fonts.
  • Also, lets see you get some 'army shadows' (where the numbers are located on most maps), up to make sure they can all fit!
