Just to gauge some interest

Postby Mr. K on Mon Apr 24, 2006 9:25 pm

Hello people. I'm having a pretty busy week so I probably wont finish my ancient greek map till after the weekend. Until then, though, I just wanted to see what you guys thought about this fictional map.

Image

Its something I drew probably 4 years ago when I was just messing around. Not too long ago, I found it and took a picture of it cause I thought it was kinda neat, and then recently I found Conquer Club and this forum and I thought maybe it could be an interesting play. So I took a little time to color it up and give it some names. (The names of the territories are pretty arbitrary, I just used last names of people I know)

What do you guys think? Would anyone be interested in playing, would it be worth any work?

it would play best as one of those more-than-6-people maps. very impressive considering you drew it.

i like it. i also like the mix of the realworld picture with the text and mountain overlays, might not need a digital version of the map itself.

Yea I wouldn't have the energy to digitally re-draw this thing. If i'm gonna use it, its just gonna be a touched up version of this.

As it stands it's doing alright in balance. I'd agree it has a chance to be an interesting large person map, 6+. I count about 83 countries (maybe). Definitely quite a lot. 6 people would get 13-14 countries each, hehe. I think a lot of work could be done to make this map.

---This map could even nearly work for a regular sized map, but that might be too much work to get rid and restructure all of the countries. It's surely interesting though.

---Some of the country names are fine. I.E. Bordon, Cregar, Lochran, Statska, Heron, Prado, Wenke, etc. Really some of the more excotic names. Not very much in favor of Smith, Robins, Star, Thomas, Evans, Porsche, Johnson---the more traditional person names.

---It's got some prospects...I'll give you that.

I haven't looked too hard at the balance yet, but this definitely has a nice visual appeal to me. And of course, I'm very much in favor of fictional maps on principle.

I "Lovett", and the penguin is adorable. I love the crinkled paper and drawing look, I thought you meant it to be that way. It's very creative. It looks like you might be able to just wipe out a couple continents in a certain area, anyway, to make for the continent info. I'm jealous... ha!

Yeah K, this would be good as a joke map. Since it doesn't seem to be a map of anything, I think you should take that element and make it define it - like there could be a continent that's just a coffee stain, or a continent where the xml is very confusing, so that you only end up attacking non-adjacent countries within it. A lot of people won't like these suggestions, but if it's not going to be a map of something, you can really take advantage of it being a map about nothing - like Seinfeld risk or something.

It's already visually appealing as a photographed image - sets a good tone.

And I think the "Star" in the pink continent should be "Starr" and the "Manzer" should be "Manzarek."

I like how there is a huge amount of countries. It would be awesome to play with that many troops.

I kinda like this idea, but then again I personally wouldn't really feel like playing that kind of map. But it does sound kinda interesting? I dunno really, but i'm glad people are tossing around ideas.

PS. I'm glad you noticed my Beatles/Doors continent. ;)

i like it, with that many territories you'd need to give major continent bonuses cos chances are people will be fighting on a load of fronts at once,
looks pretty well as it is too

The downside to playing this map (and other more exotic and/or fictional maps) is the unfamiliarity with territory names.

I would hold off on this map until Lack (or Troy) comes up with a way to list 1) all territories in a continent and 2) a list of territories held by each player.

Personally, that's why I steer away from maps with which I am not familiar.

For the former, you can look at the XML for the map in the /maps/ directory. That's not a full solution, but it might be helpful to you.

I am aware of the .xml file and find it helpful on a case by case basis, but when you constantly need it, that would be a real pain.
