Football (Soccer) Riot

Theme:
Hello everybody. I have an idea for a new game based on a concept of football (soccer) riots. The action would take place within a stadium. The goal: the hooligans have to break through several layers of security in order to conquer the center field and two opposing goal posts.

Concept:
There are 6 hooligan groups on terraces (North hools, East hools, etc or nicknames: Bulldogs, Vandals, etc). Each is a starting point (icons: bottle, rock, baseball bat, knife, brick, wood plank). Each hool group is separated by fence (impassable) and passable gate w/riot police. Riot police (icon: helmet ) starts neutral, and is heavy w/troops
(almost impassable, say 10 or 15+ troops each riot police territory). If not fully conquered in one turn, riot police territory auto redeploys to full troop count next turn.
To break into the field there are several rows of security. Security guards (icon: florescent vest), weak, 1 neutral troop, easy to break through. Then, a row of regular police (icon: police hat), stronger, 3 neutral troops. After police there are several anti riot fences and safety ditches (impassable) and several paths in-between.
Last layer before the field are auxiliary neutrals: home team bench, visitor team bench, 2 ambulances, 2 water-hose fire trucks, 2 ball boys, 2 photo journalists, UEFA delegate, police chief (12 territories total, each with own icon), 1-2 troops each.

Football Field:
2 Halves, Home Team (icon: Blue striped jersey) and Visiting Team (icon: Red striped jersey). Each team has 10 territories (icons numbered 2-11, 3 neutral troops) + goal keeper (icon # 1, 5-6 neutral troops). Goalkeepers can bombard any territory on the whole field.
Corner flag territories (4) (icon: small triangle flag, 3 neutral troops), can bombard any territory on their respective half of field, no possibility to conquer from
corner flags.
Surrounding center field are Refs territories (6). There are two kinds of refs: yellow card and red card (icons: black jerseys + yellow/red card). Refs are a negative element; lots of neutral troops, holder gets negative auto deploy (e.g. –2 or -3 troops next turn)
Center field: 2 territories (icons: blue and red checkered soccer ball), object of the game, neutral, ? # of troops.

Legend:
Regions/Territories: bonuses/minuses impassables/paths

6 Hools regions / 24 territories: riot tool icon + region bonus
6 Riot police regions / 18 territories: helmet icon + neutral auto redeploy (10) or large
auto deploy bonus if held (+ 5-8 hool auto deploy)
1 Security guards region / 24 territories: florescent vest icon, no bonus
1 Regular police region / 18 territories: police hat icon, 1 troop bonus for each territory
held, no region bonus
1 Auxiliary region / 12 territories: different icons for each, no bonuses
1 Home (Blue stripe) Team region / 11 terr.: #ered icons (1-11), region bonus, goal
keeper extra bonus
1 Visitor (Red stripe) Team region / 11 terr.: #ered icons (1-11), region bonus, goal
keeper extra auto deploy bonus
1 Corner flag region / 4 territories: triangle flag icon, no region bonus, territory auto
deploy bonus
1 Refs region / 6 territories: black jersey icon + yellow/red card, auto penalty
deploy (- troops if held)
1 Center field region / 2 territories: soccer ball icons, territory bonus

Impassables: fences, ditches
Paths: gates

Total # regions / territories (approx.):
- Hools 6 x 4 = 24
- Riot police 6 x 3 = 18
- Security guards 1 - 24
- Regular police 1 - 18
- Auxiliary 1 - 12
- Home team 1 - 10 + 1
- Visitor team 1 - 10 + 1
- Corner flags 1 - 4
- Refs 1 - 6
- Center field 1 - 2

Approximate Total Regions: 20
Approximate Total Territories: 130

Tell me if this seems like an interesting idea worth developing, or any suggestions. Also, if plausible would anybody be willing to help with graphics and code. I used to do some graphic design & web design (college), so I know a little, but got rusty in the meantime. Also, my software is rusty (no advanced photo software). Do you know of any reasonably good freeware that can do layered images (Mac compatible)?

I'm working on a draft image, but it's taking lot of time (free software, but can't do layers.
I would like to know if I should keep working on it?

Well, you have proposed a fairly complete plan of the layout, and if you produce a draft image, you will likely get more responses. Funny thing about the Map Foundry process is, once you have an advanced draft, you are expected to develop gameplay before graphics, but an idea without a pretty picture seldom goes anywhere.

I would suggest eight hooligan groups rather than six, with riot police to match, to accommodate eight player games.

Are the hooligan groups the only territories which do not start as neutrals? If so, there is very little interaction between players in the early game. It becomes a simple race to break through neutrals. Also, if the riot police are nearly impassable, how does the game ever get off the ground?

I'd say this idea shows promise, but needs a bit more to really get going.

hello ender
tx for comments/suggestions

I'm thinking I got too ambitious (too many territories/map too big). I got an idea then got carried away. :) What do you think of scaling it down to a soccer game (the field and the immediate area around the field)?

I'm working on the image. it has a field/teams/refs layout. with terraces
it would be too big.
I know that w/out image I won't get far. I just wanted to see if people are
interested in playing a football (soccer) game.

I should have a draft within a week. (I'm thinking of different ways to play it out).
maybe have as you say 8 soccer teams surrounding the field. And then play it mostly as a game, basically change the theme of game from hools to game itself.

You might want to try using "Advanced search" from this page to search through the Map Foundry and its subforums for things like "football", "soccer", or "pitch". The idea has been raised before, so seeing what was done with it and why it hasn't gone further could help you with your development. Good luck, and I'll keep watching here.

This sounds a little like Prison Riot! in a football setting, which I think could be enjoyable. I think a theme like this could develop further than a straight thematic map of a football stadium or of "straight hurling-esque" game play, with no theme.
