I made the second draft a bit more colorful and took out some unnecessary space. The area colors are a bit mixed now so it's no point in listing them here really...

My first draft of The American Civil War was dreadful. So don't be discouraged.
Fortunately, the foundry mods at that time contributed a great deal of advice to the project.

One thing I can tell you, Paint is much too limited in scope to be an effective program for map design.

I'd suggest trying Gimp or Photoshop.
Gimp is free, as are several other programs that offer a number of tools and effects.

Good luck with your map.

Finland could be a good map, nice place! ;)

As Elijah S said to you , you need Gimp or Photoshop to do a map. (a bit of practice needed )
To live an easy foundry process look here:
How to make a map
and here Map Maker's Guide
You can find some good informations. :)

Now you're in the drafting room, read the guidelines : http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=241&t=78808#p1868811
so you can understand exactly what you have to do now.

Some quick suggestions:
Resize the map (840x800 large version)
A graphic improvement needed
There's a lot of unused space

I like to see your next draft, then i'll come back with other suggestions. ;)

If you'll search for some guides or tutorials for gimp or photoshop, simply use google or look here : http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=127&t=73566

Welcome! =D>

I think the map looks nice... its just that the borders in Lapland and the names in the south are a bit hard to see

Looks like an interestiong map as a starting point
I think the colors are a bit to day-glo though, they make the terrritory names hard to read, try toning them down for you next version and it might be a bit easier to get to grips with.

I used gimp, of course, but try to use some textures (not the default) that will fit better with the map (ground, water).

I don't understand the shape of your finland map....
I did some research on wiki and google and i see it like this image:

I did quick split of the 6 main regions (continents), but you can set the territories using the provincies:
- Aland Islands (small to be divided in more than 2/3 zones)
- Lapland ( with 6 prvincies)
- Oulu ( with 2 provincies)
- Eastern Finland ( with 3 provincies)
- Western Finland ( with 7 provincies)
- Southern Finland (with 6 provincies)

in this way you have a good starting point, then you can add some big cities.... ;)
Or if you want you can draw the Aland islands in a sort of inset and divide it in 16 territories.
Finally try to use some colors that don't hurt eyes.

If you need to do some practice with gimp, you can find some good informations here:

Have a nice day

ok maybe you're right, I'll reshape it for my next draft. But the shape is right in the picture, its just broadened and diagonal since I wanted to use all of the 840x800...

Can you just change all the background colours due to plain pastille colours for your next draft, or something alike??

At the moment, I find it hard to look at for too long and therefore can't properly comment on the accuracy of your bonus set up etc. until then.

You don't need to do the map 840x800... :!:

1. SMALL MAP: WIDTH up to 630 px; HEIGHT 600 px
2. LARGE MAP: WIDTH up to 840 px ; HEIGHT 800 px.
3. SIZE DIFFERENTIAL: A large map must be noticably larger than their small map; 9% larger is required but 33.3% (1/3rd) is recommended.
4. NOTE: Mapmakers are encouraged to make their large maps smaller than the maximum size limits when possible to eliminate scrolling to attack/read the sidebar info.

Anyway, if you would like to add some foreign countries, why not to think to add Norway/Sweden/Danemark...
but i suggest you to use that space for legends/title/insets ;)

P.s. when you post a new version you have to update the first post, but leave only the current version with the [BigImg] tag. The previous versions are good as a link only ( [url] tag).

[Moved]

It would appear that development of this map has stalled. If the mapmaker wants to continue with the map, then one of the Foundry Moderators will be able to help put the thread back into the Foundry system, after an update has been made. ;-)
