wine country? (suggestion only)

Postby its_louis on Tue May 05, 2009 12:03 am

being that i grew up in northern california, i thought it would be cool to maybe do a wine country map, pretty much from the north bay area, up to maybe the northern mendocino county area, and from the west coast going inland to east sacramento-ish. with this setup i think the counties could work as countries, and either major wineries or towns/communities as territories.

the other idea i had was any of the cities from the grand theft auto series, or maybe the map from a saints row game. but for all i know that prolly gets close to copyright infringement.

There are so many areas in the world that are renowned for their wine... California is probably better known across the globe for for it's orange juice or raisins

Ahem, California wine is acclaimed as some of the finest in the world, and has bested French wine in a number of blind taste tests... Besides, if California is known for anything, it's the bountiful silicon bosoms of our females. 8-)

Portugal is better known by it's wine all across the country from green wine in Minho to Mature Red wine in Alentejo... That would be a great map... Oh Yeah 8-)

Why don't we stay talking about the idea,

Now I think that it would be the same as just making a map of California and I have heard the general consensus is that USA State Maps are a No-No

If you think about it, someone from their own state would probably want to make their own state on CC and 52 maps just ain't cool. Probably need like some sort of some subsection if that happened.

Also, on the wine, I thought our South-West Australian wines were the best in the world, but I guess it's all winery propaganda. When someone says California I think sunny beaches, Hollywood and Mexico.

Now there's a good idea. Perhaps the Alcoholics Unanonymous! usergroup could get working on this.

I'm all for the Wine country map.... Would prefer the actual wine growing regions of Northern California over counties though.. I don't think the argument against state maps applies in this case either. The same argument could be brought out for making maps of individual counties but those seem to keep being made. AND, it wasn't being suggested for a map of the entire state but rather a unique area that I think would be interesting to play. Brilliant idea I say.....

We are the fourth largest wine producer in the world, and we know enough to make syrah rather than shiraz. (Wink!) I can see it now...

oaktown attacks Napa from Alexander Valley and conquers it from F.C.Copola.
oaktown reinforces Healdsburg with two troops from Guerneville
oaktown gets drunk and loses his dice all over Sonoma

On second thought, bad idea. Nothing about my drunken ramblings up the russian river valley scream battlefield. It would only be mildly interesting if we could actually use the winery names, which we can't due to copyright. And the central valley yahoos would be upset if we didn't include the boxed wines they're growing grapes for. ;) And how about the "wine country" around Santa Barbara.. Sideways and all that?

As for state maps... I'm usually the first to rip into mapmakers for drafting U.S. state maps (of which we have 50, not 52). Usually its not because of the idea itself (which is pretty weak sauce) so much as the lack of imagination folks bring to the table. A map of California would probably be fairly popular if somebody approached it with a sense of humor and a desire to make something entirely original. But the next guy to post a flat map of California counties will hear it from me.
