N00b reporting (looking for advice)

Postby lgoasklucyl on Wed Nov 26, 2008 12:40 am

Okay, first shot here. Few hours worth of test work on a junky little map of something nice and easy like South America. I'm not seriously considering it for a map on the website, but rather trying to hone my 'skills'.

-Image removed by me because of the ongoing competition-

Okay, things I want to add/change:
-The title is the same as the territ font and that's boring.
-The water is simply horrific. Originally I was going to use a pattern overlay, but the stock patterns in CS3 pretty much suck, so I slapped a quick filter on there for the sake of finishing up.
-The drop shadow may be a BIT harsh.
-I would really like to add nice rivers- with banks like the ones in the Terraform tutorial. Not sure how to do that yet- still trying to teach myself. Mibi replied stating he simply erased and the bevel of the island created the banks. I tried erasing, but get harsh edges. Perhaps I have to re-apply the bevel after erasing? Not sure.
-Want to add mountains- probably choppy, fake, photoshoppy mountains. If I get ambitious I could burn/dodge some.
-I would like to make a practice legend, in case I actually get up to par with making a usable map. Seems easy though. I'm not that great with the whole shape-transforming process so making it an interesting shape could prove difficult until I learn it more efficiently.
-I'm sure I have other things I would like to change, I'm just tired and cannot think clearly.

I've posted this for feedback from the map-making community. Ideas I haven't stated or comments on things I have suggested would help me greatly. I would appreciate it bunches :D .

Thanks for looking/reading my page-worth of junk, especially if you're entirely uninterested

note: (first edit) I did not make it up to par with regular map size because I have no intent whatsoever on taking it in that direction. It was simply a test to try things out/learn/net as much criticism as possible. Thanks again!

You know there is a competition for creating a map of that exact area, right?

Or did you just see that and want to give it a try?
Either way, I don't think you should be posting it. Save it and submit it to the competition. You might have a chance at winning.

Oh, wow, I had honestly no idea haha. I picked it up off of google because it seemed like it had few enough divided areas to be good practice. Perhaps I'll consider entering
