Two reasons:

1) my favorite movie critic, "Movie Bob" Chipman, claims that Breaking Dawn Pt. 2 is awesome - complete camp with a fantastic X-men-like free-for-all at the end. So I decided to earn this by watching them all. I'm currently getting ready to watch the third one.

2) 5 or 6 years ago I started watching a Croatian soap called "The Pride of Rhatkay" and I figured out how to enjoy a "good" soap. For an hour you practice patience, tolerance, laughing at stupidity instead of getting upset and noticing details. It's very Zen.

1) As much as I like Escapist's various series (especially Unskippable and Zero Punctuation) and as much as I like "Movie Bob," all I can say is no. No, no,no,no,no. He's gotten some other reviews horribly wrong before (IMO), but this was the very bottom of the pit. This is... Just wrong. It's like saying Titanic or 300 were good movies   Or 30 Days of Night   Or Paris Hilton movies

2) I understand this point, but for me there's a very good line to draw between a bad movie that you laugh through the whole time (such as 30 Days of Night) and that while it's terrible, it's quite enjoyable, and movies who are bad beyond redemption - movies that are so bad that even poking at them and laughing gets doesn't give satisfaction.
But... It was so artistically done.

1) I agree that some of his reviews might have missed the mark. I disagreed with his review of 'Red State' because his strong feelings about the subject matter clouded his judgement regarding the quality of the movie itself (he did something similar with 'This Means War'). But, given how much he despises not only Twilight films but also the books, the message they are sending and the whole Twilight craze, if he says that Breaking Dawn 2 is good, then I believe it's good.
It is like hearing Hitler say that a Jewish player is the best there is (this is the internet, so I had to bring out Hitler :ugeek: ).

P.S. 300 is awesome.

2) It is more of a spiritual exercise then about just having fun. I find it healthy and relaxing, but I haven't done it in a while. Maybe the time has come for...THE ECLIPSE!

1) My point exactly. Just because an expert states something, especially with as subjective material as movies, doesn't really mean much. I also new Godwin's Law as bound to come up in this thread  A good movie, for me, has to have at least an idea of a plot and some decent acting. Other stuff are bonuses. I personally dislike mindless action movies in general - but this is even worse. In Twilight, you have a few terrible actors, coupled with terrible plot, coupled with terrible writing and most likely terrible screenplay (judging from the one Twilight movie I have seen)

P.P.S. No, it's not. In my humble opinion, it's one of the worst movies ever made. Maybe worse.

2) Fair enough. I have similar idea of relaxation, just different measures and tools. I guess I can understand this point, although I still think for this to be efficient with movies, the movies should be in that specific category I mentioned.
But... It was so artistically done.

Because I can think of no better place than fircoal's mafia game to have this discussion, I have to ask: what did you loathe about this movie so much? I didn't really see it as having anything worthy of such hatred in it. [Personally, I found it to be decent...neither exceptionally good nor exceptionally bad]

Just a few to things (some are quite subjective):
1) It sends wrong messages to both the audience and to the producers. Producers are encouraged to concentrate on effects and actions and largely ignore everything else because that will give you profit and good reviews. The audience gets accustomed to movies that leave you dumber then when you came in which have absolutely no thought in it and nothing worthy to take away bar that killing is good, mmmkay?
2) While this may not be true for a lot of people, I hate to see mockery of historical facts and places. I loath to see such misrepresentations especially because it misinforms a lot of people. While not intentionally, a lot of audience isn't very bright and may take this as actually something worth a damn... When this is not the case.
3) I think the cinematography was terrible and acting went along with it. Granted, I do think there were a few good performances/actors, but in general, that movie seemed extremely lacking in these areas.
4) The hype for the movie and the reviews make it worse. I wouldn't be this upset if this movie would have just disappeared after getting bad reviews - no, people keep bringing it up as a good/solid movie and now there's a sequel in place. I see this is a great reflection of what's wrong with Hollywood, the audience and in a way, our society in general. Granted, there are much worse movies, but I like to highlight this example as it's placed so high in a Pantheon of Movies.
5) There are other things I dislike, but I don't have time nor will to write on.

Granted, I realize I'm a Sisyphus moving a boulder right now, but I had to post it. Feel free to attack and rip me to shreds

You get my joke Vote Masket
Anyway, glad to see everyone again and being back for a game of MAFAIS!

The only problem is this day 1 should have ended 10 days ago, it's going freaking nowhere and I couldn't bring myself to read most WIFOM in the last pages. Between the calls for a Twitter-format mafia and some misguided attempts at avoiding lynches, we're not off to a good start for sure.

Even though I find many scummy behaviours the main point of interest to me is the Commie/Tal situation. Nark still always seems scummy to me but he has 40 PHDs, so...

The point is, someone has to get lynched. Tal calling for a Commie nightkill feels fishy, as someone else has pointed out it's not like we can have a guaranteed, planned town kill every night. You know who does though? SCUM!
My paranoĆÆa wheels are starting to click again, and it seems like a subtle defense Tal is doing. At this point the Commie lynch will be the best to make the most info out of this sorry excuse for a day 1 IMO.

Vote Commie

5) There are other things I dislike, but I don't have time nor will to write on.

Granted, I realize I'm a Sisyphus moving a boulder right now, but I had to post it. Feel free to attack and rip me to shreds

No, you make fair points. I just occasionally enjoy turning my brain off and looking at pretty effects...I realize it's not great [good would be a stretch]...I just feel that there are many more movies more deserving of such hatred for being stupid action flicks than 300.

I think they all deserve hatred > >

Call it a guilty pleasure...It's not that I dislike plot lines that make you think, it's just that I'm not so big on that in the medium of film. I adore intricate plots and such in books, but, for movies, I just like to sit, stare at pretty colours, and drool. I can think of worse vices. :P

I'm with TWO on this one. If nothing else, I would like a movie to be entertaining. My standards can be quite low sometimes. And to be fair, 300 never marketed itself as something thought provoking. Testosterone poisoning at its finest.

As for Twilight, I just wanted to say I tried to give Kristen Stewart a chance. I was all like "maybe she's not a bad actress, she just got cast in a role that generates a lot of hate." Well I went to go see Snow White and the Huntsman with some friends. That girl cannot emote worth a damn. When you walk through half your scenes with your mouth half open and a dazed expression...I'm sorry, you're just a bad actress.

I had the same experience, with that movie...I felt like I got the entertainment value out of it, but that was from laughing at how bad a lot of the scenes were...speaking of scenes, weren't we supposed to be getting one, soon?

The first day of Cinoville scum hunting was a long and tiring one. It started out with a hoot but as the day rolled on the minccinos got more and more tired. Some couldn't think straight and started attacking each other. Some of the onlookers who that this wouldn't do. How would they be able to find scum with good discourse and logic. It was then that one of the cunning cinos came up with a brilliant plan. "Look if we can't solve this like Minccino's. We'll solve this like a terrible reality TV game show!"

The Minccinos put their hands to their chins and thought about the proposal. They all thought that this would be a good idea. So one by one they listed their preferred lynchee on a piece of paper and submitted it to a box in the center of the town. The box was then turned upside down and each which way. The mayor of Cinoville grabbed the box and one by one and took out the votes one by one. Quickly one of the more eager Minccino grabbed the votes and started reaidng them outloud:

Commander
DoomYoshi
Commander's mom
DoomYoshi
Commander
Caffeine
Commander
DoomYoshi
Nebuch
Nark
Rodion
Commander
DoomYoshi
Iron Butterfly
Commander
Talapus
DoomYoshi
Skoffin
Talapus
Commander
JamesKer

If any cino was keeping count it was now obvious that Commander was the lynch of the day, narrowly beating out DoomYoshi 7 to 5.

The mayor went to Commander, who was now standing in the center complaining about he was lynched when it should have be the great and faboulous mod Fircoal who should have been lynched. The Mayor would have none of that, and Commander was quickly tossed into a pit of Buizels.

The town lamiented the loss, and investigated the home of Commander. There they had found the truth.

Commander9 (Miracle Matter - Copier) has been lynched.

I wasn't going go into full flame mode over a movie but then TWO tucked his tale between his legs and now I have to. Also, I love 300 and I have a long history of arguing with people who criticize it for dumb reasons. Also, I am to pissed off to do the quoty thing. You know what you said.

Chapter 1: 2) There only movies that have to depict events as they truly happened are called documentaries. Did you think that this was a documentary? Your condescending comment about " While not intentionally, a lot of audience isn't very bright" is spot on. Those who saw the trailer with Michael Fassbender flying 3 meters above ground and then came into the theater expecting ultra-realistic historical flick obviously have some issues.

Chapter 2: 1) Oh, it sends a perfect message to both the audience AND the producers: If you make a fun film that enough people enjoy seeing then you will be able to completely ignore the whines of would be intellectuals who think that a movie which can be enjoyed by the people who are not as special as they are should be reviled for failing to provide food for their elitist, bloated ego. How dare they?!

Chapter 3: 4) People daring to have an opinion different then yours is indeed shocking. It does make it worse.

Chapter 4: 3) Cinematography is IMO freaking amazing. The whole movie is driven less by the plot then by the exploration of the esthetics of stylized violence. You are criticizing a work of art just because you dislike the subject it depicts.

....

....

So, I guess that whole "Have I grown more mature?" question has just been answered, huh? 8-[
